Veterans Day 2018

My Grandfather, German immigrant, became an American citizen, joined the Army and served mostly in France.

My Father, joined the Coast Guard (Gunners Mate) stationed in Michigan.

My Uncle, William Jr. (No picture.) joined the Army, was a Tank Commander at Normandy, received The Purple Heart and Silver Star after his tank troop was heavily hit, he sustained burns and hit by shrapnel, but managed to save some lives. Very proud of all three. I tried to join the Navy right after high school, but received a 4-F due to having my Spleen removed when I was 16.

I can’t remember if I had posted this before. This was from 2013.

We just got back from two weeks in Hawaii. Went to Pearl Harbor, Wheeler Airfield and Fort Shafter the second day there. Bought what was the best item of the trip. A few decades ago I was given a flag that flew over the Arizona and thought that was a very special gift. So we found out that if we bought a flag at Pearl they would let us fly it on the Arizona memorial. So I bought the biggest flag they had in honor of my uncle Jack, my dad's older brother and his best buddy, whom I never knew, who was a B25 pilot killed in 1944 in the Pacific. So the flag we bought at the Arizona memorial store had previously flown over the Arizona on December 7, 2012, how cool (we get a certificate stating such). So we go out to the Arizona and the ranger helps getting the line ready and all kinds of guys come over asking to help. Very nice touch. Karen noted that when I was raising the flag almost everyone there stopped what they were doing, took off their hats, put their hands on over their hearts and took pictures. So after we bring it back down and we are folding it up, the ranger gives me a second form, with the date and time flown, that I can send and get a second certificate. Then I mention to the ranger that we are going to the Missouri tomorrow and she says, take the flag with you, they will let you fly it there too. I thought how cool, a flag flown on December 7th and then flow by us on the place where it all started and then flown on the place where it all ended. A solemn tribute to uncle Jack!

This is one of my most prized possessions. We fly it every year on 12/7. Was going to fly it yesterday but it was too windy.

Very cool! My retirement flag was flown over the Capitol and then in and F22 over the Gulf of Mexico by my Commander! Very special to me...but, it's in a shadow box, so no flying it.
