New Mandolin

I just got my new mandolin from my friend the luthier, Ernie Fischbach:

This is a picture of him playing the original antique mandolin he copied:

You can see the variations on this European flat back design and various wood. I got one with an ebony fingerboard, rosewood back and sides, and a giant sequoia top. The top comes from an old piece of wood and is very well aged.

What's that instrument hanging to the left of the mandolin? From the fret spacing, it looks like it should be a dulcimer, but I've never seen that type of body on one.
