Re-tubed the Evil Twin yesterday

Hadn’t played through it in a few years as it was getting noisey. I bought it new in 1997 and they were the original tubes. Finally bought a complete set from the Tube Amp Doctor. De-oxed each socket and wiped each new tube down with alcohol and used latex gloves to install them so no oils would be on them.

Played the 89 Strat through it. Damn, I forgot how good that amp sounds. Can’t get a much more clean Fender sound then an old Strat through an Evil Twin. I gotta work on my recording setup so I can post some clips.

Oh, it was a truly “world class” amp, as it had tubes from China, the US and Russia !

LOL Don, Since it is upside down, does it sound like a Marshall?

Also, my one Strat is an 89 too. Then I just had to buy it's twin but with a Maple Fboard. That one is a 90.

Pics of your 89 and front view of the Twin too. Please

"If you're into evil you're a friend of mine" Said Mr. Johnson, egged on by Mr. Young and Mr. Young.

Nice, good call to Deoxit the sockets.
I had a recent power tube failure on a 2 6L6GC push-pull and put the OEM Sovteks back in Saturday, and set the bias.
Is it easy to bias / balance these?

I see you do the clean glass thing - I work with clean hands but dont treat tubes like halogen bulbs.
What is your take on it, DonO?

The glove handling of tubes came from a friend of mine in my car club. He’s a retired sound guy that worked with named acts including Pink Floyd. Says that the oils from your hands could cause hot spots that could shorten tube life. Don’t know if that’s true but I error on the side of caution as it simple to wipe them down and use disposable gloves.

I always handle tubes with gloves....always have. I used to hang out with a T.V. repair guy when I was a kid and he wore cotton gloves to handle tubes...
