Fret level beams - straight v radius matching

A long, well matched radius beam is great for fret leveling for sure.



However, there are times that you may either not have the right size, be confronted with an odd size (15.5" radius for example) or have a compound radius. I would think that in each of those instance, doing the FB in 3rds with a straight beam is an acceptable.




I would appreciate any advice and or experiences other have had in this area of comparison.

I like use and like both. But I pretty much like any of the tools. They all have their uses, places, charms, etc...

I have a current Stu Mac catalog next to my bed. It's my bedtime story that puts me to sleep. I did the same thing with Sears Christmas book when I was kid. GI Joe gear in my dreams. Now it's all guitar gear.

I only use the radiused beams....

i only use a flat beam it is easy enough to work it along the radius.
If you work from EB across the middle to EA and back, you will be leveling the DG area twice compared to the BE and EA sections, unless you account for it in the way you move and the number of strokes.

I go in one direction a few passes, then the other.

Having a set of full length radius blocks certainly can't hurt...

Having a set of full length radius blocks certainly can't hurt...

No blocks, beams. Most blocks are too short but can come in handy for specialty jobs like compound radii where you have to split the board in parts
