I don’t like the pickup switch obstructed or too far out of the way. My preferred location is the Les Paul position. But, the SG and Strat locations aren’t too bad, as I can usually flick the switch with my pinky.

The switch location on my Jackson is not to my liking, at all, as it is obstructed by the volume knob when I have the guitar strapped on in playing position, hence my mods to relocate it.

Getting back to the Hagstrom, I also like their semi-hollows, like @BlackSG91 has. Elvis Presley borrowed one from a session player to use in his 1968 TV special.

But, this is also a lot cheaper and faster than a full custom build too...since I have dropped everything else to devote time to this band, I'm significantly "lighter" in terms of project funding.

I'm not too bummed out the switch position on the Fantomen, but I prefer the S-G layout. I'm constantly switching between bridge and middle on the S-G.

However, I play the double neck a lot and its got switches in two different places and I've adapted to that...


But they are fairly close to the picking hand...

You mean for the current blade switch?

I’m keeping that switch there. I’m going to rewire it to be a coil-split switch. Although I still don’t like the switch position, I use coil splitting far less often than switching the pickups, themselves. So, I’ll be able to deal with that okay.

Maybe it's nostalgia but I still prefer the looks of the Gibson, headstock and all. It's just got this goofy, organic, could-have-only-happened-in-the-70's vibe to it.

Fantomen is intriguing though because they use the 25.5" scale, which is what the original RD's had. Gibson messed up the reissues by putting a 24.75" scale on them.

I agree. Even Gibson has varied the headstock from time to time.

The Explorer and Flying V represent two radical departures from the quintessential, open book headstock design.

You really need to get yer butt back to the swamp-- soooo many guitar shops to pillage!! you really should schedule an extra day---- for a "custom" tour of VINTAGE GUITAR the SWAMP VERSION--led by eSGEe -- through opium dens-- brothels and seedy underside of the central Florida guitar network----might even wrangle us a MOTM-- however that usually involves lots of BEERS and B.S> and little gear store whoring-----

ALL are fun mind you --- you might need extra "shots" prior to attending the first event though.
