I was lucky enough to score a musty grungy badly bow necked little Squire P bass a while back --- for 50.00---I removed the strings and tightened the truss rod and let it "acclimate" for some time in the closet of the doom room---

this weekend I decided to fire it up -- set up strings cleaned and polished --tightened the input jack--deoxit-ed the pots--

the pups sounded week and horrible----I was surfing the web looking for some cheap pups (while looking at cheap trems) and then ---- it came to me !!!!!!!!

WHAT WOULD RVA DO!?!?! (well he would buy 300.00 gold plated Fender custom vintage played by Leo Fender pups---) BUT -- FIRST ----- HE WOULD ADJUST the pups!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well --- it was not so easy--- the old foam was deteriorated--- so off the p.g. out the pups--- foam foam foam ---KOOZIE!!! yeah cut foam -- installed--
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!
salvaged --- a badly missused and untreated "P" bass is back in GLORIOUS Service. THe Ghost of Leo Fender should be smiling :)
For 50.00 and some elbow grease---- (and new strings lol)

If I can play dog ears, and eESGEe can adjust his pickups, there is truly hope for all of human-kind!

true......very true

I adjust all my (guitar) pickups to about 4/32" bridge and 7/32" neck. If I adjust them by sound, they always end up in this range...so I just started setting them to this measurement right outta the gate.

Nice job, Man!!!

Im not into measuring--- it was more an "adjust" play (ewh) adjust more play -- hhhmmm-- adjust more play WOW I like that ! and so on...

I think that, because I find myself setting up so many guitars at times, its faster to set them to a given spec. I often help out a couple of guys with basic setups - handling the backlog - and I can put one into 'spec' before most have completed the strum/adjust/strum evaluation method.

Everything here in SoCal is at 78rpm.

I think you method is good if you are setting up a guitar for someone else and provides them a solid starting point.

agreed Ray-- now that Ray has me on this adjusting thing--- Im finding each guitar/bass has its own "sweet spot" based on many variables and nuances----to pigeon hole all to a set measurement would be counter productive to the ADJUST-ABILITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ray you have created a MONSTER lol

Factory specs are a grande place to end up. My picky and goofy friend that are stupid too will get the screw heads rounded off.

If I do a setup totally be feel and ear, which we did recently as a game so to speak - they come out to .070"/.070" - 4/32"/7/32" - .010" @ 1st fret - .010"-.015" neck relief.

Most of what I do are 'second setups' after the player has jacked with all the screws.

I keep a file on the guitars I do for working musicians. Frequently, I get tickets that read: "Please setup to same specs as his 1970 Les Paul you did recently. "

Im more a "feel" ear groove kinda guy --- but numbers are cool two ---

In a way its very relaxing/stress relieving and rewarding NOT having to "pay attention" -- or perform-- or care what anyone but my own ears/mood like on any given day ---Im out to only please an army of 1 --- me :)
if I like it I keep if I dont it goes away....
