Dorchester Ma?

I'm across the Hahbah on the North Shore. Where there be Witches!

There are a few nice independent music stores around to check out.

Mr. Music in Allston (not far from you, but a pain in the arse to get to)
Mike's Monster Guitars in Cambridge (outside of Central Square)
Mass Ave Music in Cambridge (near Porter Square)
Music Go Round in Natick
Performance Music in Woburn
Bill's Music in Peabody.

If you want to make the trip to Keene, NH, Retro Music is worth the drive. Jeff usually has cool stuff in stock.

There are also several really cool used record stores in the Boston/Cambridge area, Salem, and Gloucester

Thanks for all the music/gear recommendations guys.
Now can someone point me toward some areas with fixed income- friendly rental rates?

Try Worcester, or maybe Rhode Island, or New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont? Certainly not within the RT 495 belt.

If my wife didn't work at the airport, I would have moved north ages ago.

There are several low income/fixed income housing organizations that are available. Unfortunately sometimes the waiting list is very long, sadly enough you pretty much have to wait until somebody passes to move up the list. I've been in the property management/maintenance field for several years before I had to quit. Being on a fixed income I totally understand how tough it can be to find housing.

There’s a few 55+ condo complexes around me...some are supposed to be affordable.

With the insane property values in the Boston area these days, everyone I know in Somerville, Cambridge, Arlington, and Medford who were renting, are now trying to buy in Melrose, Saugus, Chelsea, and Lynn. Unfortunately, Lynn is on the commuter rail line, so there have been wild bidding wars on houses from last year, up until the spring and beginning of summer. Even Salem and Gloucester are suffering the same. Beverly is insane with the mayor wanting to redevelop the entire downtown, and make it one large condo complex for people commuting to Boston with the train. Houses on the North Shore have been going for $70,000 over asking price. Our house is worth 60K more than it was last year at this time (at least on paper).

Now that students are moving back into the city, rents will be high the next month or so. Especially in places like the Back Bay, Allston, and Cambridge. Or, anywhere near a University (which there are many).

From Dorchester, the only places to escape the rents in that area are maybe Quincy and Mattapan. But, they are also getting gentrified. Even with their share of crack houses and opium dens, developers are chomping at the bit to buy those properties, flatten them, then put up "Luxury Condos."

Every city is supposed to have a certain percentage of housing available as "affordable", but if they are not the land lord, the private owners will not reduce the market price out of compassion when there's a buck to be made.

I "get that" --- I have one of those as well and is why I left the Keys---- way to small a place to avoid that much evil.
