Greenback or Vintage 30

For me I like the Greenback better. Just me. My Mesa Lone Star cabinet has a Vintage 30. I may have to swap it out and compare for my home settings.

There’s a bit of a difference in power handling, but if you’re only pushing 25 or less watts you’re fine.
I’ve read that the Mesa V-30s are still made in England....most other V-30s are not, anymore, if that matters to you. I have 4 English, and one Chinese...they all sound ok in the right cabinets...to me. For instance; I despised the Chinese one that came in my (kinda spacious) Orange 1x12. I replaced it with a WGS Greenberet. I am pleased with the outcome.
That V-30 now resides in a Peavey Classic 30, where it is really just a different animal all together. I completely dig it in that application.

I had to listen to this at least5 times.
at first I liked the Vintage (or the one on the left) better, but is not an even comparison since the perceived volume is a little higher on the left, especially in the first 3 or so cleaner passages. Louder is often perceived as better and audio salesman use this to bias A/B comparisons or so I have read.
When trying to ignore the volume difference, I found the Greenback, or the one on the right to be more articulate.

Together, or with the mic centered, they sound the best as opposed to singularly, in that cab to me.
If I was about to buy one based on this demo, it would be the Greenback.
 
After actually listening to it several times-- I would have to say.....................Greenback as well.

I really listened-- I didnt just copy JT's home work.......

Setting the video aside for a moment, I'll just give my real-life opinion, having used both speakers quite a bit over the years.

V-30 all the way for a Mesa amp. Greenbacks are too reedy in the midrange and lack low-end tightness, so they don't work particularly well with Mesas IMO. Too hard to dial the wooliness out of them. Especially with high gain.

Also, the Mesa V-30's are not the same as the regular ones. Gotta try one side-by-side to see what I mean, but they are voiced differently and they walk all over both the regular V-30 and the Greenback. Again, my opinion only, but formed from trial and error.
 
I've got greenbacks over V30's in a 4x12 & use it with two amp heads that I switch between (metropolous headmaster switcher). One amp is a 1987 Marshall clone, the other a 50 watt "Tim Caswell #39 mod" type amp. From micing experiments, kinda the same result as gball above. The greenbacks are better with the 1987 type amp, the V30's much more suitable for the #39 mod type amp. Cheers
 
Judging from the view of the rear panel, I would venture to say the V30 is on the left when viewing the amp from the front??? If so, I prefer the tone of the speaker in the left side of the cabinet. Having said that, I almost universally prefer WGS speakers hands down...
