Klone Shootout

[RVA]

Here are clips of 4 Klon clones. I tried to get them to sound as close to each other as I could with regard to gain, output and tone balance so that the only diferences were innate. This was recorded with my LP Jr. with my custom pup. The signal chain was as follows

- Marshall JVM clean channel > Weber Attenuator DI > Soundcraft mixer with flat EQ > Reaper software

Effects are Zoom Early Reflections reverb and Zoom Softecho delay.

Each clip includes my poor attempt at country steel bends (I always must do my new thing instead of my best things with these clips. Why, I do not know) followed by some chords hit hard enough to create some dynamic distortion.

The Klones used are pictured below. I will reveal the order later. So which do you like best?

Thanks! I have a favorite, but since the prices range from $ 20 to $ 170, it is quite surprising that they are so close!

Marshall JVM clean channel

The clean channel sounded really clean. Almost too clean! Not sure if it's the nature of that pickup. How much were you cranking the clean channel? Which leads to the next question: Does the clean channel grind a bit if you crank it?

either way-- anyone paying the 170 got screwed (no offence RVA I know you do this in the interest of science) ----

It is a 50 Watt amp. That is on 4 with the attenuator. The JVM has a lot of headroom. It has 5 built-in distortion channels and lots of gain on tap.

Maybe it is time to sell that one! Unfortunately, it was my favorite.

Looks like I could make a go of it with a Silver Horse...but the Mythical Overdrive has the body, and the clipping, set nicely.

I listened to the clip again. This time I skipped the clean passages and listened to just the overdriven tone one right after the other. Still don't hear a difference.
