Gibson Straplocks:

As many of you know, our friends at Gibson use a #8 on the body and a #6 on upper straplock point. To make things even more difficult, most all straplocks come with two #6 screws and most of the time, the head of a #8 won't fit the lock without drilling.

The stock screw on the body of a Gibson Les Paul/SG is an #8 x 1-1/2" wood screw. The screw that comes with most straplocks is a #6 x 1-1/2" The shank of the #8 is too large to fit in the small hole of the straplock, and the head is too large to fit in the counterbore. The upper (LP) or neck (SG) straplock screw is a #6, and most all straplocks will work in this area.

NOTE: Some screws will have a shaeet metal style thread, which is a different pitch. Always confirm pitch in a side-by-side comparison to avoid damage to the guitar.

To avoid superglue, toothpicks, etc., you can drill out the hole in the Straplock button to 11/64". This allows the larger #8 screw to pass through. Next, it's necessary to reduce the diameter of the head of the screw so that it fits the counterbore of the button.

Using the #6 screw from the straplock kit as a template, you can chuck up the #8 screw in a drill and file/sand the diameter of the head down enough to pass through the straplock button.

Hope this helps....
