I know a lot of people hate "the world's best records" or "the world's best guitarists" lists. But I actually dig stuff like that. Not because any such lists can be definitive or really valid in any sense, but because it provides other people's points of view and might teach me something or at least give me tips about good music. Lists like this also remind me of being a kid making mixed tapes for my walkman. I could spend hours listening to records, picking out my favorite tunes and copying them to a Memorex, AGFA or BASF tape. I still have a ton of them lying around.
So, what 12 records would you want to have available if you were stranded on a desert island? I had to make it 12 because I wasn't able to decide on just 10... If you can only think of four or five, hey, that's cool too!
The list is subject to change, but at the moment, this would probably be mine (in no particular order of preference other than the first one:
Van Halen: "Fair Warning"
The J. Geils Band: "Live. Full House"
Fleetwood Mac: "Mr. Wonderful"
Fleetwood Mac: "Live in Boston, Vol. 1"
The Allman Brothers Band: "Live at the Fillmore East"
B. B. King: "Live at the Regal"
Freddie King: "The Very Best of Freddie King"
John Mayall's Blues Breakers: "John Mayall's Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton"
John Mayall's Blues Breakers: "A Hard Road"
The Who: "Who's Next"
Manfred Mann's Earth Band: "Watch"
Since the list will never be definitive, there are a few additional albums that would drift in and out, depending on my mood:
AC/DC: "Highway to Hell"
Van Halen: "Van Halen 1" and "1984"
Jeff Lynne: "Armchair Theatre"
Hound Dog Taylor and the House Rockers: "Natural Boogie"
Taj Mahal: "Taj Mahal"
Taste: "The Best of Taste"
I could name a hundred more, but that would be rather boring for anyone but myself...
