When NOT to learn scales

Very cool never really looked at it in that concept before.
On the other hand a lot of my material came from learning the scales, if that makes any sense, and by mixing natural minor and penetonic minor for different chord sequences, something I still do, along with the occasional off the cuff type of thing as long as it sounds right.
