Whats your setup

Since now that I have been playing for some years now, I have come to the ideal guitar setup for myself.

1. I like a floating Bridge, so I can use it as a trem with the palm of my hand.
2. The strings are not low , but slightly higher , not to much cause I don't like doing bends where your finger goes underneath the strings.
3. I find as well get better sustain.
4. I have used different strings , but find I prefer D'Addario Nickel wound 10-46s get good life from them, so far have never had one break and the price is right in my book.

I have my Fender Strat set up for a floating vibrato or as Fender calls it a tremolo. And I basically use for all my guitars Ernie Ball Slinky strings 10-46 but I find bending easier on my Gibsons and my Godin which is Gibson scale length.

I have a "range" of set ups--- mostly tailored to the particular guitar-- most being reasonably LOW action -- some FLoyds Float some dont -- some Trems Float -- some dont-- its all very organic-- some basses have MEGA low action -- some a tad "high" but the neck width and depth play into that as well......

but in GENERAL -- low action
"9"'s ....and light gauge flatwounds on the boom sticks.....or tapewounds.......or.....ugh

Pretty much like he said...

All my guitars get the same setup. Strings are .009" x .046" and action is set to .065" @ the 12th. First fret action is .010" to .015" respectively. All humbuckers are set 4/32" from the strings...

Okay...this gets a little complicated...

I use a 9-42 set, with a wound .017 third string replacing the stock G string, on these guitars:

1) Jackson Dinky, with Floyd Rose
2) 2014 SG Original 2, with Maestro
3) 2007 Les Paul Studio (no vibrato at this time)

I use a 10-46 set on the following guitars, with a wound .018 third string:

1) 2006 Stratocaster, with stock Fender floating bridge
2) 2007 Les Paul Custom, with Vibramate/Bigsby B7 kit
3) 1974 Gibson SG, with stock Gibson Bigsby-style vibrato
4) Washburn HB-30 (no vibrato at this time)

The Jackson and Strat are my two guitars with floating bridges. I set them to float. I do have the Strat bridge set up so it floats a little closer to the body than the manual specifies. The manual calls for 1/8” clearance. I haven’t bothered to measure, but I’m probably at about 3/32”.

I setup my guitars based of feel. Every guitar is different. I eyeball the string height and relief then make small adjustments while playing it. To dial it in can take an hour or so. Once I have the string height and relief dialled in I adjust the pickup height by ear. Once that's done I adjust the intonation. I feel it's important to do intonation last as all the other settings will affect intonation. I also feel that it's important not to rely too heavily on measurements. Different guitars respond differently regarding playability and tone to each adjustment. Depending on the guitar and the tone and feel I'm looking for I'll use anything from 9 - 42's to 11 - 52's but generally on Gibson scale I use 10 - 46 and Fender scale 9 - 42. If I can't get the feel I'm looking for or I can't get the intonation right I have a luthier I use but so far I've only sent him three of my guitars and two of them were for fret work which I don't have enough experience at.

I made a major, monumental change to my stringing setup.

I changed the strings I use for my SG Original 2.

I now use a 10-46 set with a .018 wound third string on that guitar, as well.

That’s all.

Have a nice day!
