Didn't really want to start a thread, but couldn't find an existing one that fit. Saw this photo/meme and got me thinking.... how many automotive things did many of us grow up with.... grow up tinkering with.... worked on..... etc, that people today would have no idea about. I'll start.

Distributors in general. Points in particular.

I used to use one of those at the restoration shop I worked at. It was the only way to tell if the advance springs were good.

I still have all my points checkers, dwell meters, and timing light from back in the day. Good thing, now that I have my ‘74 Super Beetle.

I never had a dwell meter. Don’t think my dad did either. And actually, I only owned 3 cars that had points between 70 when I got my license and 77 when I bought a Chevy with HEI. There were the small engines I worked on at work that had points/cond. 1980 they moved me into the parts department and that came to an end as well.

Dude, I used to drive a 74 Super Beetle, too! I did the whole John Muir thing: warmed it up nicely, carried engine oil in a baby bottle, did the valves every 500 miles. Ran like a watch. When I sold it, the new owner blew the engine in, like, 3 months.

I had a '72 (sky blue with a sunroof), when I lived in Cocoa Beach in the late 80s. That thing was fun, I loved it! I once had 5 guys in it going to see Tom Petty at the Lakeland (FL) Civic center. Those were the days.

Curb Feelers, white wall tires.

View attachment 106033 I really do remember a time when pretty much all tires for cars were white walls. I couldn't buy a black tire.
View attachment 106034 Remember when motor oil came in cans? It wasn't that long ago either.
Guilty as charged. Remember curb feelers and metal cans. And yes…. Having to have the tire shop mount my new tires with the whitewall in so the blackwall was showing.
