These Strings!!!!!

I have heard both ways. II'm uncertain.
I'm pretty sure that's the whole point of the pure nickels. Most string manufacturers have their version of pure nickels. If you got a guitar and pickup combo that's inherently too bright, these type of strings should warm up the tone a bit more.

So EB doesn't have a .048"-.038"-.028"-.017".012"-.010" set available over tge counter, so I decided to make one from singles....this was the best sounding gauge on the Doublneck thus far...

I mainly selected them for corrosion resistance. Not sure if that's a valid attribute.

Ok.....here's my delima. I played this guitar with thd 10.5 D-Addarios that came on it...then switched to Ernie Ball Hybrid .009's....then switch back last night to Ernie Ball .010's.

The guitar sounds much different - much better - with .010's - especially clean. The clean tones are simply mind blowing.

But....

String bending is an arduous affair. The dramatic bends in Hotel California alone is a real chore. But, there's no denying there is a huge tonal quality difference in that tiny change in string gauge.

A quick check of Gibson's website reveals that .010's are standard equipment on the EDS-1275.

My fingers look like they've been through a meat grinder!!!!

Chin up. You can adapt to it.
Maybe pick up a steel string acoustic for exercise now and then. It can be a huge help.

I can, and do often, reach for it from my La-Z-Boy. Good exercise for the fingers on heavier than electric strings.

For sure I will have to adapt to it for tone's sake. That dramatic bend at the beginning of the Hotel California solo is a struggle to bring to pitch!

I read an article somewhere in which Don Felder alluded to using .008's or .009's on his guitars - which would make sense based on his seeming effortless bends - but the .009's on my guitar - to my ear - sound like a department store ukulele compared to the .010 gauge strings...

I been thinking - I like the tone of the .010's but iss the expression of the .009's. The .048"/.038"/.028" of the D'Addario set sounded really great, when compared to the .046"/.036"/.026" of the Ernie Ball sets.

So, this got me thinking...EB doesn't offer this set, but I can get them in single string packs of (3) strings for $0.99 each.

Why not mix the EB Power Slinky .011/.048" (EB2920) with the Hybrid Slinky (EB2222)???

That would yield a set like this: .048"/.038"/.028"/.016"/.011/.009"

Thoughts????

Robert, EB got their start selling custom gauges so people could mix and match just like you are thinking of doing so I think you are on the right track buying the singles and creating your own perfect custom set.

I've tried the hybrid sets from a couple different companies (9-46) and they felt a bit unbalanced to me so went back to standard 10-46, but I share your opinion on how the unwound strings feel.

I appreciate the encouragement, Man!!!

I like how the 48/38/28's "bark" on power chords, but I'm missing the "expression-ability" of the G/b/e strings

Yeah, that's the part if it I like too. I guess I could get used to the hybrid strings, new Gibsons ship with them after all, but I would have to commit and give it some time.

Torn between two lovers, as the song says...I guess I bend a lot and immediately noticed that I lost a lot of "Vibrato-A-Bility" with something as simple as a few thousandth...

It was Fender who started this with their Rock'n'Roll series. They didn't even come in sets - the shop had a long container like a card index drawer, and you picked out the gauges you wanted to make up a set. Or just bought single strings if the mood took you.

Right you are!

These strings go on when I close my eyes
Every second of the night I live another life
These strings that sleep when it's cold outside
Every moment I'm awake the further I'm away

I like it when I get a guitar re-strung right the first time. I often think of my now blind friend while I string guitars. I envision how he manages to string his guitars anywhere close to perfectly. The last time he and I were together, he mentioned how he accidentally got the G and B strings reversed. I could see how it could be easy to do especially not being able to see.
