So lemme get this straight.
Sometimes the project becomes more important than the product. He loves the equipment for what it is apart from what it can do. We have all been there.Aaaand...it still doesn't have the power and dynamics of a live performance. But the dude literally says "music couldn't sound this good any other way"
Of course the guy can spend his money and time any way he wants, but this kind of excess has got to be a symptom of OCD.

As many of the comments mentioned, you really don't get to see the system in action. I wonder if he genuinely loves music, as opposed to just audio equipment.
The whole mess can be avoided with a great pair of headphones!I've had a few self-identifying audiophiles as friends, and I do agree with you - seems the pursuit of the system becomes more important than the appreciation of music at some point. I even had the experience of assembling a high-end system myself a while back and ended up having to rein myself in because I realized I was putting lots of money into amps/preamps/speakers/etc but not into buying new music. So I sold all of my expensive audio gear and bought a pretty modest received and CD Player and a whole bunch of new music instead.
