Starting new trio

I’m about to come out of my skin I’m so excited. I’ve been going to a local bar jam once a week for many years. A couple of months ago we lost the venue to new owners going in a different direction. I’ve played at a couple of open mic’s and a couple of private jams but I’ve really missed playing with a group of musicians live where you can feed off of the audience. Last week a guy that was at our last few bar jams contacted me. He wanted to know if I wanted to jam. I didn’t know at the time but he had an ulterior motive. We got together and really hit it off. We like the same music and play at about the same level. As we wrapped up he asked me if I’d be interested in playing in a trio with him and a female singer. I told him I’d have to think about it but in the mean time we could get together and feel how it might sound. It was awesome. She is an amazing singer. I’m going to the city tomorrow to rent a small PA so we can can practice and see how it goes. She sings and plays guitar but is more interested in just singing. Jim wants to switch back and forth between electric and acoustic and singing backup. I’ll be playing electric, acoustic, 12 string, mandolin, and possibly bass as needed. Not sure if I’m up for playing in a band again but I’m going to give it a try.

Nice going! Playing in public is like practice on steroids. However fast you think you have been progressing so far, double the speed. You are going to have so much fun.
Yes, I've really missed playing live for the last couple of months. Playing at home or even with other musicians isn't the same as playing live. I've done a few open mic's as a solo act but it's not the same. There is something special about hitting a groove with other musicians and an audience at the same time.

Rented an 8 input mixer, Bose powered speaker, and some SM58s today. We’ll be able to try all our instruments plus a lead singer and backup vocals to see what sounds good. Once we settle on a sound and what instruments I’ll start looking for some used gear. The system I rented is probably overkill.

Can you describe the music ya'll might be playing?
Some Dylan but his bluesier stuff like Highway 61 Revisited, some original blues rock songs by Jim and I, and some mellow country pop that our singer likes. She has some pipes and can sing almost any genre. I was watching TV tonight and heard Seven Nation Army by the White Stripes. We need an anthem type song so I’m going to suggest that one.

Awesome Kerry...hope it goes well. Sounds exciting!
I’ll be in Vancouver and Whistler for the last two weeks of January 2020, so if you are playing a bit further afield than your home town by then and are playing in either of those places during that time I’d love to come and see you play.

Squamish is on the way between Vancouver and Whistler. Stop by on your way through for a coffee or a beer if nothing else.
