SSL certificate for this site?

Hi Guys,

Not sure if you are aware, but investing in an SSL certificate would be a good idea. Google is giving preferential search returns for sites that are secured with an SSL certificate.

Ask whoever is hosting this site.. It does not have to be expensive (about $20 per year), but don't do a certificate that you sign yourself (those are bullshit).

We had cars with a gyro type geared wheel in the middle and you fed a rip cord into it that was like a big plastic Zip Tie.

Those things were fun.

ok, is there some sort of hoster / service provider that we use here ? In theory, the Hoster would have to put the Certificate in place.

The only possible issue would be migrating the forum (if it needed to be migrated to have the HTTPS).
 
If it can be done at no cost to Wav then OK, but there really is no need that I see. We are not conduction business on this site.
Just a bunch of guitar, amp, and gear in general loving guys hanging out telling stories and sharing ideas.
 
Normally they cost about USD 20 per year.

They are vital for ranking in Google now.. Ranking = more members = growing forum (rather than a dying forum)
 
The whole chain of trust for certificates is broken. It is very easy to get a certificate that allows a site to be impersonated. The only really useful things certificates do now is encrypt communications between your computer and the web site unless you buy a much more expensive certificate. If Google has their way it will become increasingly harder to connect to sites that are not encrypted. You will always get a warning that the site is not to be trusted. For now this will only affect Chrome users and as has been mentioned Google searches. I would expect other browsers to follow suit. All sites really should be using certificates in any case. It can be more than simply installing a $20 certificate. Most sites are shared with many sites using the same IP address making it more difficult to install a certificate. To install a certificate the web hosting would probably have to be upgraded adding a monthly cost. Perhaps if there was a paid membership category this cost could be covered. The way the industry is going sometime in the near future a certificate will be needed.

When combined, Chrome and Firefox have a 70% share of web browser usage. So, 70% of potential new users are, just like me, receiving a "This site is not secure" warning when they visit.

In any case, I recommend it be added. But the Admin can do what he wants.
 
We do not sell anything on this site nor do we ask for personal information like credit card number, social security number or your address. Any information you post here is at your desecration. We do not sell or share your information with any person/company/service. We also do not charge for membership here. However there is a fee that must be paid annually for a secure certificate. I just finished setting up a SSL for one of my clients that does sell products online. The cost for the SSL certificate was $200 for 1 year + my time to set it up + upgrading the server to a static IP address. If at sometime in the future we have a need to purchase and maintain a SSL certificate, we will do so. For now I recommend that you do not post your drivers license number, social security number, credit card number, mothers maiden name or your address on this non-secure forum. Ya know, even if we did have a SSL in place, I would still recommend that you do not post your drivers license number, social security number, credit card number, mothers maiden name or your address on this forum.

Currently I have been paying out of my pocket for the web hosting of this site. I have donated my time into building it. If y'all want to chip in and pay for a static IP address, the cost of a secure certificate and fees that will be incurred to move this forum to a secure server, I will do the work to get it installed. However I do not wish to incur any additional costs to me for this web site at this time.

I'd be willing to chip in. What is the cost so we can figure out who wants to pay and how much each will have to pay.

Godaddy has a sale for the lowest level SSL Certificate | Secure Your Data & Transactions - GoDaddy which is currently on sale for $59.99 per year. The server hosting will also go up $10 per month, so $120 in addition to the current $120 annual fee that is the current cost to host this place. There is also a set up fee at the hosting company to set the SSL in place, I don't recall exactly, $35 or somewhere around there. So the annual cost for this would be around $335... every year. The top tier SSL I just set up for one of my clients took 30 days from start to finish, but they have the highest security level. This low level SSL will still take a few hours of my time to get set up and moved to the new server. There may be some downtime while I work on errors in the coding to reflect https:// in all of the links that are currently hard coded with http://

This is my opinion also. We don't have any information here that you don't knowingly place here of your own free will. If you don't want people that you have never met in person to know what gear you own, don't post it here. Simple no brainer. We don't ask for you personal info, we don't share your email address.

Agreed, I'm working my butt off. So much that I barely have time to pick up a guitar or get online here. My life has been a series of highs and lows many of you already know. This is one of those high times where I'm keeping busy and making money. I'm actually working now and have an emergency after hours call coming in from New York.

That's about what I thought. My only experience with certs is setting up Exchange servers which usually need a $150 SAN certificate but I did run a few forums in a past life. I'd be willing to chip in $20 to $30 but it's up to you. It would probably be easy to get donations to cover the first year but next year when it's renewal time it may be tougher. Honestly if it was me as long as you're not interested in being in Google's search index I'd wait and see how many complaints you get when browsers start putting up warnings about the site.
