Spotlight - Gibson CS336 - Monday

The CS336 is the custom shop version of the ES339. They vary primarily by the fact that the 336 has a one piece mahogany back and sides that is hollowed and capped with maple, where the ES339 has maple/poplar/maple ply and is assembled as back/sides/top. There is a mahogany center block and no feedback

This is the only guitar I have owned, or even played, where I enjoyed the '57 classics. It is a warm and sweet sounding guitar that makes you want to strum and sing. That said, it can rock if you want it to.

That guitar has a gorgeous top.
Are the sides flamed too or do they match the back?
I'm an ES guy and would no doubt love it.
My Birthday is coming soon.
:)
Thanks!

The sides match the back. The back and sides are actually one piece of mahogany hollowed.

Being used to the "bigness" of an ES 335 I wonder if I would be comfortable with one of those.
I had one of the first Double cut Les Pauls and eventually sold it because I couldn't get used to
the shape and size. I mostly play standing up and it somehow felt wrong hanging from a strap.

Alex's ES 355 TDSV...
I had an older ES 355 TDC SV (mid 60s).
The C is for cherry. It was a red one.
They are great guitars.
I am tempted to hunt down another one.

It is as comfortable as an LP, except lighter. What deterred you about the double cut aspect? I do not imagine it does anything except increase upper fret access and change the switch location. I am OK with the switch location, but many do not like a toggle there.

The double cut sounded great.
500T bridge pickup absolutely killed.
The front strap button wasn't placed at an
awkward and dangerous to the guitar angle.
The switch was in the right place and it had full access to all 24 frets.
It was also chambered so there was no boat anchor issue.
I figured it would be the perfect Les Paul for me.
But...
It just didn't hang right on me.
Something about the body shape and size and
my body shape and size just did not get along.
I'm not comfortable with them.

I have a question for you non-tonewoodies. Technically speaking, how does the hollow/semi-hollow nature of an electric guitar affect tone?
