There’s plenty of songs that people think mean one thing but actually have a different—sometimes darker, sometimes not—meaning.
The first that pops to mind for me is the first song* I ever learned to play on guitar:
Sympathy for the Devil
The title might make a person think, “Oh, there go The Rolling Stones, praising Satan again!”, but the lyrics actually are a cautionary tale that (if you believe there is a Devil), you need to be cautious and stay away from him.
The added message is along the line of “Don’t just blame the devil—Beware of your own worst nature or sinful tendencies, because they will catch up to you…and he is more than willing to facilitate your own evil!”
—The second song I think about in this regard is “Every Breath You Take”…the number of people who think this is some kind of romantic love song baffles me.
What songs can you think of that mean something different than many people think?
*it’s kinda funny that this was the first song I ever learned to play—I was (and still am) very active in my congregation and was raised a Good Christian Boy…but I’d already learned the lyrics and saw the true meaning many years before, so I had no qualms about learning and playing that song regularly.
