So Goes the Saxophone as Does the Guitar...

With the guitar it's pickups, strings, fretboard, neck and body wood. All things people speak of to change their sound.

I've already found with the Saxophone we have, mouthpieces, reed brands and sizes, metal types and plating and even the necks!

I guess every instrument has things that people claim, rightly or wrongly, improve/change the sound.

Reeds are like strings both size wise and price wise so they are easy experiments. But mouthpieces are more in and above the
pick-ups price range. A top of the line mouthpiece can run you $500 while some of the "good" ones are in the $100 to $200 range!

Oh, the rabbit holes we go down.

I truly believe, that, once you start digging into the arcana of any topic, whether musical instruments, automobiles, stamp collecting, etc. you have opened the proverbial Pandora's Box. The casual participant won't know or care, but the moment you immerse yourself in something all the tiny details become so important. That's all part of the journey and what makes these pursuits a worthwhile hobby (which in some cases can also become a career).
