Yesterday, several of us musicians were sitting around in the lounge talking just to pass the time. Someone mentioned signature artist guitars and the conversation took a turn.
It all started when someone mentioned the odd, 'Silver Sky' John Mayer guitar and the conversation shifted to the Tom DeLonge signature Strat - which only has the first 5 frets we are told - and then onto Yngwie, Beck, Clapton, Wylde and so on.
The discussion then turned to what our own artist signature gear would be like - a what if scenario if you will - and I waited quietly until I was challenged.
Guys really went mad on this topic, but my answer was predictably practical.
For my signature guitar, it would have to be an Epiphone Les Paul. I would want my signature model affordable to the average musician. I would want the open book headstock but with Epiphone logo, like those specials they use to build. Epiphone HB8N/HB66 pickups, EDS-1275 inlay, Epiphone wiring, Pure Tone jack, paint shielded (cost cutting measure) Aluminium Nashville and tailpiece, Green Keys and come with Dunlop Straplocks.
My signature rig would be a DSL40H with the capability to switch through two different sets of preamp tubes - on the fly - and would come with:
ECC83S/ECC83MG/12AU7/5751 and ECC83S/12AU7/ECC83MG/5751 factory installed along with KT88 power tubes.
The head would have a D.I. line out and integrated cooling fan. The channel switching foot switch would be wireless.
My 4x12 signature cabinet would be loaded with WGS Reaper 55Hz 16 ohm speakers, but with a twist.
The cabinet would be made of (4) small cabinets - each containing a single speaker - that fastened together to create a pair of 2x12's or a single 4x12. The cabinets would have jacks that would enable them to be connected in different impedance combinations, but once connected, would appear to be - and could be moved like - any regular 4x12 cabinet.
Probably won't hit Guitar Sinner for a while...
