Shopping while home depressed

Monday night my father passed away from a mix of Alzheimer's/Dementia, a weird form of blood cancer, and kidney failure.

While I was dealing with stuff in emails, I thought I would finally buy a Variac. I have needed one for quite a while as my household current is usually between 126 VAC and 135 VAC. Right now, it's 135. I really want to keep all my amps running at 110 VAC like they were designed to operate at. It was also a 20 amp version, with two outputs. I figured it would be a good multi-use unit for my workshop.

After that, I guess I had a beer too many, and bought myself a new SG Special in "Vintage Sparkling Burgundy" finish.

The SG was shipped to my parents house, and the Variac to mine. I didn't want the wife to see the SG. I'm too broke to be buying stuff right now.

Anyway, the styrofoam inside the Variac box was destroyed. As well as the Variac. The intenals had bounced around enough to damage the value plate under the indicator knob, as well as the knob. I don't dare plug it in.

Then when I got home with the SG tonight, I noticed two sets of deep scratches in the neck.

So, claims out with both parties involved. Wanted the Variac as a practical X-mess gift to myself. The SG, more of wanting something of a remembrance to my father. Also, saw one of these in person in London back in September, and fell in love with the finish. Have wanted one ever since. Because it's a limited run, I thought it might be a good investment purchase. So much for Gibson's improved quality control. This left the factory like this. I may see if they'll credit me some cash, and sell it to me as a "Blemish Model", and then try to polish out the scratches. I'll wait until they contact me.

what the?!?!?!

1. John very sorry for your loss--- lost my Father 13 years ago this past Nov and I still miss him to this day.
2. did they KICK THE SG BOX ACROSS THE YARD?!?!?!?!

Not a scratch in the box. Whoever Plek'd the guitar, or put the strings on did that. It should have never left the factory like that. Especially with a metallic finish such as that. Any imperfection stands out like Godzilla on a beach.

Very sorry to hear about your Father, my condolences to you and your family. Also not good to see about your guitars, looks like Gibson hasn't learned anything from their mistakes, I am not surprised though. Hope you can get everything sorted out. That's why I wont buy a Gibson overpriced and their quality control issues.

Sorry for your loss. Cancer took both my mom and dad. Mom when she was only 70. 2001. Dad a few years ago. Mrs. IbLive’s mom is battling dementia so we get your pain of watching your dad battle that. Cancer is horrible, but I think the mind going is way worse.

As for the items damaged in shipping. I’m sorry that with the other thing s you were dealing with, something like this had to be screwed up. Hang in there.

When life kicks you kick it back. Don’t settle for good enough. Make them fix the problems with the variac and the guitar.

Condolences on your father. My father passed several years ago after a long battle with Alzheimers. Even though you are expecting it death is never easy to deal with. Hang in there.

I am sorry for your loss brother. Sometimes I think life is a cruel joke. So finite, so short, and so much of that time necessarily wasted on things not worthy of it.

I hope you find some strength in friends and family, which I imagine you are rich in. As always, we are here if you need anything.

There's no way I could comprehend the suffering your Dad went through, and it scares the crapp out of me when I think about it. But rest assured that he's in a much better place now. Very cliché, but very true. My sincere condolences to you and to all those that knew your Dad.
