If I placed a .018uf and a 0.01uf side by side, twisted the leads together and soldered them into place, what effect would this have???
 
In your diagram I don't think the big capacitor will do anything except when the pot is wide open. My understanding is that the signal will go to the capacitor with the least resistance, which is the one attached to the wiper (center pin) in your diagram.
 
I'm not sure I understand your question...
On that online calculator, if the units of capacitance is in Microfarads and you enter ".01", then the .01uF is converted to 10nF. If you then add a ".018uF" to the 10nF (.01uF), then the calculated total in parallel will be 28nF, or .028uF.
 
The way I remember the values are

Micro = 6
Nano = 9
Pico = 12

Microfarad is 10 to the minus 6th farads 0.000001
Nano is 10 to the minus 9th
Pico is 10 to the minus 12th
