RIP Chris Bailey

Chris Bailey, singer for the Aussie band The Saints has passed. Not sure of any details yet. The Saints are recognised as recording the first real punk song, "I'm Stranded". The Brisbane band recorded a demo of the song on a shoestring budget, guitarist Ed Keupper didn't even have an amp so used a bass amp & distortion pedal. EMI's Australian exec's passed on them but somehow the demo ended up in EMI's London office, where the execs rang the Aussie division demanding they sign them immediately. Anyway, enough of the history lesson, RIP Chris Bailey.

Always loved this video of them.

Cool video. IIRC, Radio Birdman were on the bill that night too. The Paddington (built around 1890) was a great place to see bands back in the day. Only a small room, but great acoustics with a 9 meter high ceiling & hardwood floor

Located in inner city Sydney (Oxford Street), at most a couple kilometers from the cross (Kings Cross), it was in a really happening part of Sydney. Now a heritage listed building

This is the "I'm Stranded" video that I should have posted earlier, as it features Michael Hutchence, Nick Cave etc talking on the impact the song had here in Australia & on the evolution of punk.
Cheers

Love this----

RIP great man n the late Eighties I lived in Dallas when The Saints tour came through and I bought a ticket. I was too young to getin but I bought a ticket anyway, thinking I would charm the security or something as I REALLY lovedThe Saints, and they would let me in. No dice. Three days later, I am in Houston and The Saints are gonna play and again, still, I am too young to get in. My friends, with their fake IDs buy tickets and leave us out inthe cold so the three of us odd ones out go around back and wait for the tour bus to get there. I explain to The Saints, probably Chris Bailey hiself, my story of being a young fan and not being allowed in to see them in the cabaret. Dude says to come with them backstage to hang with the band before the show, so we snacked with The Saints and watched the show from backstage, for free, with friends, and snacks. Love you Chris Bailey, I remember hearing you in the seventies and you changed my life. With friends... Rest Well Chris, I will watch the horizion for them Ghost Ships....

Sara J did a nice tribute to Chris on today's Gorilla Got Me radio show on WMBR 88.1 FM. She's the blonde in the photo of me with Deniz Tek.

Along with many great songs, she played an interview she did with him back around '07.

I'll post the link to the archive page. It will be there for two weeks, but if you right click the pause button while it is playing, you can save it and play it any time. I have many hours of WMBR saved to my computer.

Look for Gorilla Got Me Friday April 15 4:00 pm, then click "Listen." It will appear at the top of the page.
