Repeating mistakes, lost and found tonez.

I like some top end sparkle, think Fender-ish. I usually think I get that with the Quilter. Now the tone has been missing fpr a while and I've been searching everywhere, I even started watching amp reviews and looking for used pickups. The latter is particularly funny since I'm not a big pickup swapper. I try to compensatw for the missing sparkles by increasing the treble on the amp which means that it instead gets shrill.

All this while I deep down know why the tonez are missing, I know because I've been here before, more than once. I need new strings. 15 minutes after realizing that's the bullet I needed to bite my tonez are back. Either that or I got smacked over the head by Mr Placebo. It doesn't matter, the result is the same. Why don't I learn though? Is it because the degradation happens gradually and I don't really notice it until I notice it?

Probably a little of both. At least it's just strings and not your ear drums.

Have come across this myself, I try the knobs on the amp first, but if a head cold is in the mix I have to put the knobs back to where they were, and then if a string breaks and I replace it, and my tone on that string has the bite and clarity I like, then they all get replaced ..

my string dont last long, when i play i sweat like a pig and sweat kills strings, i recently start wiping each string and hardware after playing where my hand been touching. that way string lasts bit longer.

Yea I have been doing that for a good long while , I used to have bottle of some type of string cleaner that I used to have, that used to help a lot.
Back in the early 80’s I would change them every week.
Not now though.

I describe mine as corrosive sweat. Kills strings real quick. I starting using Elixir strings a few years ago and found they last a lot longer. Been using them ever since.

Hmmm...

I seldom seem to have the time to change strings proactively. Sometimes, I break the high 'e' and just wind a new one on.

On my Floyd Rose guitars, they all stay in perfect tune. When they start going flat, I know it's time to change strings.

However, I can hear when a set of strings is starting to go dead...its when I feel like turning up the treble or presence controls...

I did the math with Elixir strings. They are supposed to last 3 times longer than regular strings. However, 3 sets of good old D'addario XL110's still cost less than 1 set of Elixirs.

im the same took me a while to figure out why screws bridge had discolouring. LoL i use to play Elixir strings but moved away for some reason.i blame ad and cool packaging

Yeah, that's exactly how i feel too, a need to turn the trble up. That doesn't help though...
