Question about slaving

I have a question about something in particular.

My Friedman JJ Jr. has the capability to be played WITHOUT having a cabinet attached.

See the description page from Friedman's site:

"The JJ Junior also allows you to play "silently," meaning you can safely play the amp WITHOUT having a speaker cabinet connected. The XLR output includes a ground-lift, level, and center/edge of speaker cone simulation switches."

Then further down it says:

  • XLR Cab Simulated output with Ground Lift, Axis and Level switches. You can record without having your speaker connected

...But what if I don't want to record silently, what if I just want to plug a cable from the SEND of the JJ Jr. to the RETURN of one of my 100 watt Marshall heads?
Can I safely do this without having a cabinet connected to the Friedman? Or is that only applicable if I have an XLR connected? I do plan on having the cabinet connected to the 100 watt Marshall, but only the Marshall....

Merry Christmas!

I don’t know if you want to do that with the balanced out….it doesn’t look like you can turn off the emulation(cab/mic) thing…at least not completely. If you were to slave out, I’d go from the effects send of the JJ, to the return of the Marshall. Make sure that nothing is plugged into the speaker outputs on the JJ…the lack of speaker cables in the jacks switches the dummy load into play.

Yeah, that's exactly what I wanna do, is run the JJ through the power section of the Marshall utilizing the loops. Exactly as you describe. From JJ jr. SEND, to, say, TSL100 RETURN jack...

So the built in dummy load is only operational as long as there are NO cables in the speaker jacks. This makes sense to me.

I'll probably try this out in the near future.

The idea is to approximate what the full sized 100 watt JJ might/could/maybe sound like.

....This just goes against my instincts is all lol

That’s how you would do it so the Marshall won’t color the tone,

Yes, but normally I would need a cabinet or a dummy load connected to the sending unit in order to avoid damage to the sending unit, as far as I understand it...

This amp, apparently has a built-in dummy load, so long as the speaker jacks have nothing in them...which, to me, seems unusual. Enough to worry me about it lol

Understood, my Origins have the same feature.
I know this because of my grandson and his buddy unplugged my head to try another head, and didn’t plug it back in.
I got home fired up the amp plugged in an got nothing, cranked it to 8 nothing. Then I started to check what could be wrong,,, no speaker cable !!! Plugged it back in and everything was good, lol
Cheers

That's cool! I was not aware that the Oris had that feature too.
The second time it happened was I moved all my amps to the other side of the garage, and I had plugged in a bad speaker cable. And I didn’t notice that there was nothing coming out of one the amps, found the problem and replaced the cable, but for a week it was still being turned on ..
LoL

Update:

Well, I did it.

The JJ Jr. has been slaved to my DSL100H.....And it's pretty intercourse awesome!

I wanted to try my TSL100 as well, but I've never used the loop(s) on it, and I hear that many people complain of excessive noise while using the loop(s) as well as volume drop.

Anyway, it sounds pretty awesome using the DSL, so I didn't get to the TSL today.

However, IMHO, the TSL is a much more powerful and meaner sounding amp, if that makes sense, and with my recent overhaul, the tubes are fresh and I know it's just gotta sound pretty great as a slave amp....hopefully lol

I'll get to that at some point.

Love my TSL. I use a noise gate in loop to quiet any hum. I need to fire mine up again.
I also love my TSL, as much as a problem child as she's been......she was my first proper tube amp.

I don't have more noise than I did using the DSL.....could I still benefit from a noise gate without adding poop to my signal chain? Will it rob sustain?

If you don't have excessive noise then don't bother, I say. Set properly it shouldn't rob sustain although for fast heavy chunking I would just turn it off.

Years ago, I had a BOSS ME-30.
It had all kinds of stuff to mess around with, one of which was a noise gate. I didn't know much about what I was doing back then, but I remember liking it a lot until I wanted to let a note ring for a while...then it would always kill the sound at just the wrong moment lol

Anyway, I went pedal-less for a long time after that.

While I do have a very select couple of pedals I use today, I'm still very much a straight-in, no mess of cables and stompbox player. I don't find too much noise from my rig, in part because of my minimalist approach, I would guess.

That all being said, lol....I'm straight into the Friedman, from the Friedman's SEND to a BOSS CH-1, BOSS GE-7 to the TSL100'S Loop A RETURN...and it's pretty huge sounding!

Yes
Pin 2 XLR connect to tip of phone plug.
Pins 3 and 1 XLR connect to sleeve of phone plug. (ground)
If there is a ground loop may need to disconnect pin 1.
