Wouldn't it be easier to just move the neck pickup back and add the frets in the resulting space?
That would also have the added benefit of adding more meat to the neck joint.

Upper fret access would suffer - and it wouldn't be half as much fun.

I should have realized that.

This does result in different string placement for the neck pup (closer to the bridge). Some take issue with this.

I believe this also accounts for the big PRS neck heel

I didn't realize that PRS had a telescopic neck option! Must only be on the Private Stock models!
