My son and his team won the District Championships today in Portland. The FIRST Robotics competition was held this weekend where his team ended up winning! I was so out of my mind watching the matches this week. This is the first time this team has won Districts since 2014.
The competition started on Thursday with qualifying matches going through this morning. Then the top 8 teams select their "alliances" and make up their teams, which include 3 teams per side. Then it's a 2 losses and your out semi-finals. They were expected to do well, but not win the whole thing so it was an absolute hair-raising experience to say the least. Usually their team does well enough that they are selected by one of the top 8 teams during the selection process. But this year they were the ones who got to build up their team. And their teammates performed perfectly. Like a well oiled machine they dominated all but one match. That one match was one of three in the finals which were a best of 3 game. They won the first, lost the second by less than 6 points out of 120+ and then won the third by a good margin.
They automatically qualify for the World's Competition next weekend in Houston.
Not gonna lie. I had tears wellin' up all afternoon.
