Peavey immediate & constant vs the sag ??

Ok, stumbled on headfirst guy on the tube. Amazing teacher, finally someone got across to me whats going on with circuits.

Now having Peaveys recently absolutely chew up every other amp in a mix...

Is it the choke keeping the voltage up vs the Marshall sag..Now i love sag for rock-blues & actually depend on it (think jtm45-so excellent) but for the heavies this in your face attack just eats up other amps especially under the mic & in the feel of your attack , it simply helps very well in that particular type music & lower tuning.

Is it the recovery voltage that does this when chords are hit?..that magnetic winding holds the future need voltage ready to go. maybe. Do Peaveys just got it right on 5150's & Ultra's & JSX (crazy in your face response like no other)

My DSL100 was heavily modded & it had the JCM 800 hammond choke & some value changes here & there & it was like a completely in your face marshall without losing the tone at all. Going to get DSL 100 H & learn to mod,

A choke is an inductor it smooths AC ripple or sign-wave in the high voltage power supply most tube amps over 30 watts use a choke

Thanks, will watch. Was fascinated by the headfirst dsl 100h video of the choke being installed in place of r11 i think it was. That was done on my 100h & that amp was so so dif. it chased out quite a bit of other amps that year.

What was cool to understand was how a resistor is just there but a choke holds reserve ready to go when needed.

Looking forward to finding a dsl 100h & learning some mods.

Peavey's are super tight, esp the JSX, 6505/5150 models.
That's why they are a staple in so many metal bands throughout the years.
And a lot of them have a tightness choice switch on the back where you can make them more loose or more tight.
Great design and tones too.

I would love to have a 20 watt version of any of these amps, but the ones they have use EL84 power tubes so it's a no go.

I agree, went 120, 120 & 100 watts on last 3 amps & the feel & most def the full tone is back especially getting back to 4x12's. Its not for everybody due to living environments but if you can run em wide open at proper band volume.. wow the fun is back..its an experience every time that 5150 goes on..

Now Vox ac30. Bug V22 or Orange TH30 with el84 oh yeah !! that edge of breakup tone or chimey raspy cleans.. or sizzly gain

The power supply has a voltage.
When you hit a chord, the voltage drops down, this is the sag. (this creates a change reduction of loudness)
As the chord decays, or you stop playing, the voltage creeps back up again. (this creates a slow increase of loudness)

When there is more load on the power supply = the more voltage drops down. Ohm's Law.

This up down cycle creates a loudness envelope described as attack decay sustain release.

It's the capacitor that is storing the majority of the energy, the choke works with the capacitor to reduce hum (hum is the ripple in the power supply voltage) the choke increases the efficiency of the capacitors filtering...
The choke can store a short spike of energy but not continuous or sustained.
