A big ol tree just fell against my house after a windstorm.
Guess what I'm doing tomorrow?

I tell you the last few weeks have been one crazy thing after another.

The tree looks like it was close to the house. Had it been further away it probably would have caused more damage maybe?

Street sign too?

My construction friends told me years ago you don't want a tree within 75 feet of your house
I live in a rain forest gives your house a chance to dry off I cut down 57 trees around my house

Well it looks like you'll be cutting up some firewood for the winter

Well it is a lucky spot and could have been much worse. Thankfully you have that.
The tree can help hold the house up, or maybe you can make guitars out of the tree?
What kind of tree is it? Is it a tonewood tree?
Maybe now it's a firewood tree.
Anyway I'd probably wrap a cable around it, and pull it back from whence it came.

Yeah, our home has too many trees close, but it's nice in the summer for shade as we have no A/C. But cleaning gutters all the time sucks. The tree was only half dead but obviously weak. Kind of a freak wind storm just blew through.

Getting up there with the Husqvarna tomorrow to try to bite it off in pieces. Just hope there's no major damage... gutter is bent all to F, might be reparable. .Glad it didn't fall the other way onto the neighbors garage. This tree was firmly mine, some we do share.

Yep, gonna be firewood.

I don't recommend parking your car in a rain forest.
I tried it once, and a Guava tree grew up through the middle of the car.
Well, by that time the car was sort of rusted in half anyway. It was only a 914 but I still miss it.
Oh yeah, don't park under coconut trees either that's a bad spot too...

The tree is what we call a black poplar up here, I think most similar to a cottonwood elsewhere. Glad to see it gone. It sheds fluff for two weeks every June, halted many a guitar refinish... then it drops 3" long caterpillar type things that totally clog up my downspouts. Good riddance!

I had two cottonwood trees older than Moses 10 feet across had them professionally removed it took a crane
My music buddy Joe had the trees removed around his new winter house in Kona

Good luck with the chain saw today. Make sure all you cut up is tree parts.

And I feel your pain. Our property to build the house was cleared out from very dense timber. About 1/2-3/4 acre. Like you. A few too many too close to the house. Also like you. Very nice in the summer. Reduces the AC bill.

A year or so ago we had some trees removed that were kind of "iffy" for that very reason. One had leaned to within 18 inches of the house a few years back when it got laden with heavy, wet snow. That one, and a few others, are now gone and were turned into mulch for me by the company that cut it down.

The last two years we've had practically no snow, though.

Whittling away now for a couple hours taking small bites

break for lunch RN and will rig up some sort of chain and poly tiedown web harness for myself to take on that tall fugger. Gotta anchor myself to the chimney stack.
at about five feet from the edge of the roof it's still about 14". Can't cut that tall bit unless I stand almost on the very corner of the roof, and it's about 15 feet up. All the sawdust and leaves and small twigs make it pretty slippery. Once that's down I guess I'll just have to cut 12" rounds off until I get to the roofline. after that, not sure what I'm gonna do but .y brother in law is coming for a visit tonight... way smarter than me!

Complicating things a bit, gas meter is right underneath all this stuff. A lot of weight came off so far... tree is no longer rubbing on the roof at least... but that also adds a bit more unpredictability. I can see why the pros soak you good for this work

Well, i got my rigging all set up, from two sides so I could basically lean over the edge and feel pretty secure. But.. it just didn't feel right. I dunno what... Spidey sense was kicking in. Plus the wife was busily shoring up my life insurance.

So, I chickened out. Listen to that little voice, it's seldom wrong.

There have been arborists in town with a cherry picker for a week now, doing work for the village... I inquired with the admin to see if they'd do some cash money work, and apparently they are open to that. So, I now wait until tuesday to see if they can take out the biggest part. In the end I got about 1/2 of it, but the risk was not worth the reward to try for the rest with my limited tools, bravery and capabilities. I'll always second guess myself, but at least I will
be around to do that. At least it's not rubbing against my house, I took so much weight off it. but a big storm rolls through again, could be trouble.

That trunk piece sticking up is still 11 inches across, a lot of weight maybe 1,000 pounds. It comes down, busts rafters etc.. then I'm on the hook for big $$ major inconvenience. I'll wait a few days. Just kind of weird being on my back deck looking at that imposing monster hanging above.

Spend the last three hours bucking up and piling what I did manage to cut off. Work enough for today, showertime! It's a hot one today. Saw chain is loose and dull, that means I done something!
