Obsession with LP weights

As a kid not old enough to legally purchase…. Did not do MD. In my corner of western Illinois Boones Farm was the crappy drink of choice. :pound-hand:
If the U.S. would drop the drinking age to 16 like the real free countries have, and let parents teach their kids how to drink socially (and responsibly) at home, the U.S. wouldn't have such a high rate of abuse and alcoholism. Instead, we bust parents for giving their kids booze, and send the kids to foster homes. Real smart, if you ask me. Growing up, I could always have a glass of wine or beer with my family, never more. And there were rules associated to it. Were chores and homework done? Were other criteria satisfied, so that I could have a reward at the end of the day while the family was together watching tv, playing board games, or involved in some other "together" activity. I want to say my first glasses of wine or beer were given to me when I was eight years old. But, it had to be socially consumed. I could never say, "Hey I'm grabbing a beer", and go off to my room or be involved in some other anti-social activity. And, it was only a small glass, not the whole bottle. As a result, I'm not a day drinker and I really try to have my day finished and in some sort of order before having a couple/few beers.

Exactly this.
I've lucked out a few times with ordering guitars online. But all 3 of my Les Pauls I played before I chose them.
I only ever ordered one guitar before ever playing it and the was the Explorer Pro I got. I wanted like a 76 reissue Explorer type but then that model came out and it was Translucent Amber, didn't quite buy me in. Then I saw the Translucent Black and was like " I don't give a $hit I want it" lol and so I ordered it from Gruhn Guitars in Nashville. They went down to Gibson and picked it out, set it up and then shipped it. Literally a gamble but one that I don't regret at all

I have played all of mine before purchasing, except for 1 , it was the white LP studio,, but it was a keeper and I lucked out.

With all this talk of playing your LPs, I broke one out and started playing one today…

Funny you mention that, back on June 25th, I bought my wife this little Crosley Cruiser record player. Looks like the old light green picnic portables from long time ago but Bluetooth connected too. I grabbed a copy of Fleetwood Mac Rumors that's a clear LP and when I brought it home, shes been playing it all the time, even robbed her parents old LPs. Kids think it's bizarre to hear the hiss and pops lol

I was a believer that the thicker the wood the better the sustain, but kinda got shocked when trying out a 95 LP Studio vs a 96 SG Standard and the SG sustained as long as the LP. So that theory got blown to pieces for me. Truthfully now? I don't think any of it matters. I think sometimes it's luck of the draw on how a guitar sounds when talking about a stock guitar. Hell, the same SG I'm talking about sounds different than mine and they are the same exact year and model of each other.

Obviously, modding it yourself changes things depending on what you do to it. But to address the issue simply? I don't think weight or thickness matters at all unless we're talking comfortablity.
Personally, Im not a fan of featherweight guitars nor am I fan of boat anchors, something in the middle for me. Again, just my own preferences. Kinda why I picked the Explorer I did because it's slightly smaller and lighter than the usual ones, though an untrained eye wouldn't spot it unless you sat it down beside something like a '76 Explorer model
Yet there are discussions that lighter guitars will resonate more, easier to move, so to speak, thus creating more sustain.
I just play what I like regardless

I used to use distilled water and this brush. Helped reduced the crackle and pops.
