Now, Tell Me Music Stands Are Cheezy

My oldest kid got me a Music stand several Christmas’s ago. Use it all the time, especially now that I sit on a chair to play instead of cross legged on the floor. When I had to get help to stand up because I couldn’t feel my toes…. Decided maybe it was time to sit in a chair.

We used music stands when I was on worship team. All volunteer band. We had enough people that I only was on about once a month. We got our songs for Sunday less than a week before we played. Practice Wed or Thurs. play Sunday. Zero time to memorize. It was what it was and it worked.

LIve rock bands at a gig however never use music stands - they are indeed cheezy. It is a show and one should know the material well enough before. Not the same with the worship band that has no time. One person sitting and playing or just a jam or whatever of course! Use what works.

I was lucky in the 1980's 4 rack solid steel 48 pounds it can get kicked no issues
If i was to get a new rack it would be the K and M all my mic stands are K and M or AKG made in Germany

That looks very cool @Don O , but I’m afraid that I could not be trusted with such luxury.My mic stands holds a mic, an iPad, a slide, picks, a rag and a water bottle. Kind of a multi purpose stand.

Sometimes my mic stand IS a slide though…it’s definitely on the receiving end of violence far too often to be trusted with a tablet…or shorting fluid.

Yeah same. Just a little platform on mine to hold slide, a bottle, rafts of pics, maybe a small camera and we have small attachments for phone to run monitor mix for in ears.My mic stands holds a mic, an iPad, a slide, picks, a rag and a water bottle. Kind of a multi purpose stand.

But I hate looking like I am reading charts etc plus I do not stay in one place very long.

My mic stand is on the far right. When you have this kinda room I like to make use of it!
Now imagine 4 music stands with papers in them across the front there. Kinda loses it's rock show appeal....

Yup. Same here. I have a mic stand with a little tray that holds a slide, extra pics, and a capo for the periodic acoustic song. I also have an iPad mount on that stand, but I use the iPad for our monitor mix app. I like to use an iPad rather than my phone for the mixer app; the larger size let's me adjust things to greater precision. Also, I make a .pdf of our setlist and use my iPad to display that. I prefer to use my iPad for the set list rather than just printing out a sheet of paper and putting it on the ground. If you're outside and there's a breeze, it won't blow away!
To me, context matters. In a worship band setting, having something to display a chord chart is indispensable due to the limited amount of time to rehearse and practice, plus there are often last minute changes. I also wouldn't have any qualms about seeing music stands used with a jazz ensemble. You better know I used my iPad to see the music when I played in the pit orchestra for a play a few weeks back! There, I made notes on the dialog as well. The crowd's not watching the band, anyway. They're watching the play.
But, for normal gigging, yeah, I really work to commit our songs to memory so I'm not looking at a sheet of music.
