NLD---- New Laptop day

Well, here is my virgin post on my new laptop.

In my infinite wisdom, I decided to get a used laptop at a decent price.
So today, I found a pair of used Dell laptops. Both are Dell Precision M6300's. The first was off Ebay for $110 shipped but I needed one sooner so I went to Washington DC and got the other, plus a docking station and an external hard drive for just under $160. Now, I know these are older machines. I didn't steal em, but considering the software loaded on them, I think I made good choices.

I am looking forward to using Microsoft Office, Photoshop and a number of other new ones I only had brief experiences with. Hopefully I don't encounter too many bugs or flaws that cause unknown malfunctions.

Pics will follow once my 2nd one arrives. Until then I will try for some pics off the web.

LOL yup Don O, I already pulled my Hard Drive out of my old laptop to mount in external drive to save that data.
I also plan to use at least 2 computers, the HD and the cloud to back everything up, if not add even more pieces of hardware and software to do so.

Thanks for the tip.

A disk image and emergency disk are different than a backup. A disk image will restore everything, including apps, all updates and all registry settings. A backup is typically just data.

What are you doing up at this time in MD.

Any time on the computer info.....

You are funny, O. Sometimes I am up even later researching stuff. Often times it is stuff like amp repair, electronics etc of stuff I had no formal teaching on, but am lucky to know some smart fellas who live in places 5-20 hours ahead of us here in east coast USA.

I am also hoping to diagnose the problem that occurred in my original HP G71 340 US Laptop as to why it is getting no juice even plugged in.
Hoping it is the power port that seems loose and wobbly that might be causing a power no go.

Also, hoping it isn't a motherboard issue. Thankfully the SATA HDD I removed from my HP is still functioning in the SATA USB enclosure I have and I can access the info on it on my new Dell in the E drive..

My HP started out as a WIN 7 OS, then after my initial disasterous HDD crash, I purchased a few other HDD's and had a buddy install one for me but he had to load it with Win8.

Now my 2 Dells will be running WIN 10. Just FYI

The more I think about my most recent decision to buy what amounts to my 3rd and 4th computer ever, I am really considering that having multiple units, each dedicated to specific uses and then having backup plans in place such as Don O suggests, makes a whole lot of sense.

Thanks Grumpy, This one is built like a tank which is good for my rough edges. I like to not walk on eggs 24/7 if I am to expect a long life out of my tools, or other stuff I pay good money for.
