Hardness Tester that is!

After ordering the heat treat oven I was informed, poked and prodded to get a hardness tester. The knife community is just like the guitar community...enablers!

They said I can't tell if I'm getting a good heat treat with a way to check hardness...so now this resides in my garage. And I don't even have my oven yet!

...and NO the bike is not mine, these pictures are from the sellers house. He did try to sell me the bike though.

Congrats!

What about the etchants and microscope to have a look at how the grain structure looks like? :D

I have etchants and no real need for a microscope. You can see the grain structure just fine with the naked eye. If its bad it's easy to see...

Chris, I flat out loved metal and wood shop in middle school. Nothing like being 13-`4 yrs old and able to use a Forge and to twist and shape and quench metal. Then the other fun started when we got to turn metal on a lathe. I remember making a cool cannon.

Now as a 55+ knucklehead, I have seen on TV a smidge of your type skill of knife making. Quite a talent and assemblage of skills needed to fab up good stock and then to process it into blades.

It is quite a bit of work and there is a serious learning curve for all the different skills needed to complete a knife.

The good thing is I am actually skilled in this area where as the guitar playing just never clicked with me no matter
how much time and effort I put in...

Yup, I learned things like Damascus steel, different numbers to describe steel etc.
