HNGD to me!

Earlier this week I picked up a 2006 Peavey HP Signature USA Custom with a deeply quilted maple top and finished in tiger-eye! The headstock has a matching quilted maple veneer and the ebony fretboard is bound in flamed maple.

I am really not a lover of gold hardware but I think I can make an exception in this case! It has a TOM style bridge and the stop tail piece is actually a proprietary piece that goes completely through the body. The strings load through ferrules, like a Tele and then pass through the tailpiece.

I restrung the guitar last evening with 9-42 EB Slinkys and took the opportunity to have a look under the pickups. The maple top is at least a 1/2" thick!

I had considered firing up my soldering iron and removing the gold pickup surrounds to leave just the open bobbins but I will have to think on that a bit more. Any opinions?

I promise more photos of the neck and back when I get home this evening.

That's a pretty sweet looking guitar. I don't like the gold partial covers with the cream/white rings. I would lose those and screw in some gold pole screws. I would probably put in gold slugs as well.

@ninjaking67 post a picture of a side shot of that bridge and tailpiece when you get a chance. From the above picture it looks like it replicates top wrapping a Gibson tailpiece pretty closely. I want to get an idea of the string break angle over the bridge.

The string break angle is very shallow, similar to a top wrap, as you said.
I will be sure to post a photo for you.

What you should keep in mind is that the gold "plating" is painted on.
It looks like real plating but it's not.
Chrome is also paint.
Heating this with a soldering iron may cause the gold paint (or chrome) to peel off.
Just a heads up...

Thank you for the heads up, AMS!

Last evening I got a really good deal on a nearly new set of zebra SD Alnico II Pro humbuckers. I think that I may pull the stock pickups from this guitar and try them in here. I have a set of the Slash variation in my Warmoth LP and they sound great so I’ll give them a shot here in the Peavey.

That way, I won’t risk damaging the stock p’ups as warned by Amp Mad Scientist.

I like those open covers for the naked humbuckers. I got a black pair on one of my SG's. If the gold is too much, maybe black will work better for you. I got mine from Philadelphia Luthier Tools & Supply.
