Today, I installed my first set of Weber speakers in to a cab....this cab...

The old blue Kustom. The ubiquitous backdrop for many of my gear photos...It was JBL loaded. The plaque around the jack plate read “D140F”....it’s a 1968, and I’m pretty damn sure that I’m the first to open it since the factory performed customer ordered options. The big ports were not standard equipment in 68, only an add on, and apparently the customer wanted the D130F JBLs instead...because, when I cracked the seal in the back I found these:

in pretty darned good shape!

I was afraid that I may have done damage to them, but they are looking pretty flawless!
I didn’t want to do any damage to them with my ham-fisted bass playing, so I ordered a set of Weber speakers:

They seem really cool so far, but I’m just breaking them in.
The only real bummer....no more silver dust caps:cry:.

Originally, the cab was wired at 4Ohms...I decided to go to 8Ohms. Now this cab can be paired with either of my Peavey cab’s if desired. I have not yet tried guitar through it.

What is the plan for the D130Fs?
I’m not sure yet. Maybe keep one, sell one. Maybe sell both. Maybe keep both. It’s not that I didn’t like them. It was my conscience telling me that I would damage them if I continued to crank up a bass through them. The Weber speakers are rated to handle 175 watts each, and should be capable of handling the punishment.

JBL
It's actually Sansui.
But the deal with JBL D130F is that it was rated like 60-100 watts originally.
It was really designed for guitar, with extended high frequency response. Not really a bass speaker at all.
Now many people call it a 35 watt speaker.
So it is easy to understand why the power handling needs to be increased.

This speaker is really great as a Hi Fi Woofer.
So if you take out the D130s from a bass amp, you can use them and build a pair of studio monitors.
They sound excellent in ported hi fi cabs.
I used to use them in my EV Century cabinets and they sounded killer.
