NAD Marshall DSL40CR

So...... The difference between the ECC83 I took out and the ECC823 I put in was that the ECC83 I took out actually worked!
They must have sent me a dud!
With the 823 installed I could maybe get the 40CR as loud as a Marshall MS-2 Micro Amp, on any channel.
Except with plenty of hiss and no gain.

Reinstalled the 83 and normal service is resumed.
I tried the 823 once more to eliminate 'seating' issues, but no-go.
Back in with the 83!

But, at least I got to do the 40CR re-bias.
It had held pretty steady in the year or so since I first biased it to 35mV.
The right was still at 35mV and the left had only drifted down to 34mV.

Now, to pen a letter of complaint.
I have gotten a Mullard RI in that manner :(

Sorry it turned out like that. They've been pretty reasonable guys in the past, I'm sure you'll get a new one... They should have tube testing equipment so should be a no-brainer to verify your dud / the new one they send you...

That's ridiculously fast shipping btw, usually stuff doesn't move that fast even inside the country (or even inside the same city...). For some reason I'm not getting notifications from this thread, I was wondering what happened with yours.

Coincidentally I re-biased mine yesterday as well since I was shuffling stuff around. I also put it at 35mV/35mV. I had not checked mine before but one of them was initially quite a bit lower, maybe 32 or so?

The replacement ECC823 came by snail-mail on Friday and I managed to install it yesterday.
All is good. :)
The difference is quite marked on the OD channels.
Not really had a chance to put the amp through its paces yet, but the ECC823 reclaims about 2-3 notches on the Gain dial to my ears.
So, if you are tempted @aon.....?

That's great to hear!

Yeah, the ECC823 is definitely on my list of things to try eventually, along with the 6CA7s...
