Mod fever, anyone?

I've said it before, but I can't help repeating it. Modding is part of the fun with guitars for me. Naturally, the best thing about guitars is playing them and making music, but modding spices things up for me. I have shown countless pics of my 2014 Gibson SG Derek Trucks signature model that I have turned into something resembling a 1964 Standard converted to a stoptail. I have swapped pickups in several of my axes, swapped TRCs, pickguards, bridges and whatnot, in some cases to tailor the guitar to my tastes, and in others to restore it to a more original state.

Some of you also probably know of my love for several of the guitarists of the Allman Brothers Band; Duane Allman, Dickey Betts and Derek Trucks in particular. What does this have to do with modding? Well, the thing is, because of Duane's '57 Les Paul, I have always wanted a goldtop. As you know, I have one, a 2011 LP "1960" Tradidtional. I have already modded it quite a bit; the pickups, bridge and pickup rings have all been changed, but I haven't gone "full Duane" on it. Until now. I know this is silly and pointless, really, but I just ordered a more period correct, wide bevelled TRC, an amber switch tip and a set of vintage looking "milk bottle" Grover tuners (yes, I got money back on my taxes...). It won't make the guitar any better, the Gibson green keys that are the stock tuners are great, and it most certainly won't make me play more like Duane, but these things just bring out the kid in me. Modding inspires me to pick up the guitar more often.

And, yeah, I have a set of 1969 Gibson T-Tops that I'll probably put in there too. It currently has a really lovely set of Throbak PG-102s in it. It sounds divine, and there is really no reason to swap. But after installing another set of late '60s T-Tops in my 2018 SG Standard, I got really excited about T-Tops. The question is if I want to risk a magnet flip in a set of vintage pups like this, because I NEED the Peter Green out-of-phase sound in the Les Paul...

Anyway, on a completely different tangent, just a few words from Bergen after eating a nice long breakfast. I'm lying on the sofa, Chubby Checker is twisting again on the radio, and I'm sipping to a nice cup of coffee from a roastery called "Cuba Life" in my hometown Kristiansand. The roaster himself is from Guatemala and the beans are grown in Guatemala, by the roaster's dad. Now the Aussies the Bee Gees are playing. My wife is sitting next to me, knitting a sweater with yarn made from Shetland wool. It's a small world, really. Have a nice day, guys. And have fun modding those guitars!

(Pics will follow when the new parts have arrived.)

Hope the back is doing better Gahr.
Modding has always been a big part of my life.
Started as a kid with bikes, then mini bikes, then guitars, then cars, back to guitars, even the house isn't safe from mods.
They call it "home improvements" with houses, so I now declare all guitar mods to be called "guitar improvements.

Improve away, brothers & sisters!

Thanks, Hack! The back is getting better. Slowly, but I'm getting there!

Ditto on the modding. I’m a car guy..... so yeah. Done those. But the used G400 I bought 10 years ago wasn’t safe. I learned about electric guitars on that one. Over about 2 years changed everything but the wood and the switch and the bridge studs. Only reason I didn’t change the switch was that the G400 had too shallow a cavity for the switch that came in the kit. Ended up spending way more than an Eppi is worth, but I had a good time and ended up with a really nice guitar. This confirmed by several of my guitar playing pals that know way more than me and are way better players.

I would NEVER Mod a guitar-----sorry couldnt even type THAT with a straight face!!!!!!!!!!

I have several that are bone stock --- only because ---well they are AWESOME as is ---(The Peavey "T" series for instance and the 1970 Les Paul Recording Guitar--frankly it would be sacrilege to mod it IMHO ) most everything else has been "massaged" in some form and the Warwick Corvette is on the bench this morning for shielding and a tone cap change---so........

MOD ON GENTS!

I must confess... I have spent much more time modding, researching and designing than I have actually playing. I'm a tinkerer. Up until the beginning of this year, there has constantly been a project on my bench. Mod on my tone tweaking brothers and sisters, mod on!

It's cool..there is many aspects to this guitar thing....just caught myself this year. Thought i was going to put guitars together & build amps...There is a strat on the table for 2 months & my tech guy had to "fix" my Laney IRT 60 ..lol...Sat down with Mrs & set some goals.. am a player & studio musician...that's my focus & only have X amt of time on earth to play...so i lined up the Gibson's with the pick ups required & 1 tele & 1 strat. all amps are majorly modded to personal taste. The modding was so cool to learn how to manipulate tone in amps. Set ups are A# 1 priority for me...never let any guitar of intonation...spend most mod time on set ups..1 a night in rotation..a great playing guitar set up to personal taste..is heavenly !!

A hot iron of at least 40 watts, and lots of light.
I have a StewMac OptiVisor. Been a Godsend for the past 10 years.
I highly recommend it.
yeah..going to get my eyes checked again soon....got a magnifier on my jig..seems to be a depth issue...we a mess..wife has no balance yet..30 minutes in the recording booth is it for her...we have to keep me glued together until she is ok again. I was really hurt last year also..concussion..broken leg..but when ya gotta provide..the show must go on..kinda sad ..my gait(stride) is altered forever.. like to run & my leg is not tracking right...like i am 1 beat of the track in recording ..lol
