Mashed Potatoes to die for...

The humble food of the common man, made just right:

I like to use redskin potatoes when I've got favored company coming
or when I'm invited to a dinner party with the understanding that I'll make
this recipe. But Russets will work, or California Whites, or Idahoes, or what.

I peel them only minimally... just cut away anything that looks too earthy.
Cut them into cubes and boil them in good well water till tender.
(about 12 minutes, no more)
Lay a wooden spoon across the pot, to prevent it from boiling over.
Use medium-low heat, just a rolling boil.

Time it so that the potatoes are done just before everyone sits down at the table.

When the potatoes are tender, drain them in a colander.
Put them in a large mixing bowl.
Add powdered garlic, Sea Salt, fresh ground pepper, lots of butter and
generous dollops of sour cream. Mash them by hand with something like this:

I know it looks like a grenade, but it's really harmless. It needs no batteries
has no LEDs, never requires software upgrade, is cordless and it leaves tasty and home-style lumps in the potatoes.

Complete the mixing with a wooden spoon, and taste the potatoes to be sure you've
added enough of the key ingredients. Nuke the bowl for a minute and a half in the micro wave,
and serve immediately. If you get the ingredients right, these potatoes will need no gravy or
additions of any kind, but will be eaten with gusto by just about everyone, including picky kids.
We like to hear our guests ask, "Are there more potatoes?"

One thing that was nice about my daughter when she was still living with us is she made great mashed potatoes. I like red potato's my self and I prefer leaving the skin on 'em.

I think sweet potatoes and yams (are they the same thing?)
in any form, mashed, baked, fries, etc. are my favorites.
The little red ones and the little yellow ones are good too.

I do love me some good, homemade, mashed taters.

That sounds like a must-do recipe, Col.

I think my favorite potato preparation, though, would be the fully-loaded baked potatoes that they serve at Texas Roadhouse.

Have you tried the baked sweet potato with cinnamon/sugar and butter at Longhorn Steakhouse------- MMMMMMMM

I don't think we have them here yet but
I have had sweet potatoes that way.
Also mashed then baked with a layer
of marshmallows on top.
