Transformer coupling direct is one good way but good transformers is expensive.
Good transformers are like Jensen, Triad, etc.
Cheap little transformers will usually lose frequency response and alter the sound quality.
Transformer is probably better for clean guitar. The nature of a transformer can alter distortion into different wave forms.
The transformer tends to round off a square wave into a sine wave, when the transformer is not saturated.
But push it hard enough and a transformer will break up or distort in some way.

I was around in the eighties, but never had a need for the line out.
Like how the spec.s are engraved, reliable method.
