Laney Ironheart 212

The 16 ohm Orange PPC112 was not cutting it as a cab for the Joyo Zombie II so I decided to get an 8 ohm cab, and figured that I might as well get a 212 with over 120W power handling while I was at it, so that I would have a lighter cab that could handle my Peavey valve heads at band practice when I want to use those for whatever reason.

So I saw these Laney closed-back 212 cabs that are 160W 8 ohms, have nice carry handles and are only 18 kg for $550 brand new, so I ordered one. It works well with my JSX etc and I tested it with the Joyo at band practice and I can definitely get away with it in that context.

It also fits under my desk! Bigger than the Orange but still fits. So great for jamming in my little office or practicing scales etc. Pretty happy so far. Speakers are a little trebly and fizzy with the JSX but that counters some of the darkness of the Joyo

This cab sounds fine with the Joyo - it lets its meagre top end through - but awful with my JSX. I had to turn the presence completely off and wind the highs back to a very low level to get it listenable. I'm pretty sure the issue is the cheap HH drivers that Laney uses, not the cab itself.

I'm installing the two V30s that I took out of my 412 when I fitted the H75 Creambacks. I already have one in and I have to buy the other one back from my friend that I sold it to. I'll fit one of the HH speakers to his practice amp and give him the other one as a spare, and give him back $100 out of the $150 he gave me for it before (fitted). At least this way I avoid the temptation to buy the last H75 available in Australia, which would cost me $270

It does increase the total weight of the cab by a couple of kg. The HH drivers are ceramic magnets like V30s, but they are half the size.

Even with just one V30 it sounds a lot better! Laney do make a V30 version of this cab with a stereo switch and red tolex but the price is twice that of the HH version. I might as well install my old broken-in V30s for a lot less.
