Jimi Hendrix died 50 years ago today

I loved SRV's energy, playing style and his vocals, but I tolerated his tone...No disrespect, I just can't love that bright, thin tone...

I'm with you Robert. Both Hendrix and SRV's playing is mind-warping but I have always kind of struggled with the tone, particularly JH's. And I remember seeing Yngwie years ago and that tone just cut your head off, too shrill for my taste.

I've tried myself to love Stats over the years because they are so versatile in many ways (and for a little while there I had only two Strats believe it or not) but I have frankly given up because every time I have had one in I have felt compelled to gut it and put some kind of humbucker in (I resisted this urge on a couple guitars where they were too valuable so I ended up selling them on).

I completely understand the Stratocaster Anomalies and how they seem kind of incomplete without a humbucker.

I've not heard Yngwie live, so I appreciate your comment on his live tone.

The one time I saw him was many years ago, in the '80's. From what I have heard in clips he's tamed the brightness. Maybe those YJM pickups cured the problem for him. It was also one of the most absurdly loud concerts I ever attended, so might be that my ears were roasted pretty early on in the show.

One thing I can say is that the dude definitely was not joking around with that insane backline of his.

We were right up on the stage just in front of him (for those that remember this was in the concert hall at Hammerjack's) and from what I could tell every one of those Marshalls was actually on and every one was freaking dimed. It was a roar like nothing I have ever heard - it made a Motorhead show sound like teenagers in a garage playing Loverboy covers. The rest of the band was almost impossible to hear because we were too close to the stage to get much more than stage volume from the amps, not much of anything from front-of-house. I really don't know how the guy controlled the feedback running a Strat into what must have been 2000 watts of Marshall and probably 20 4x12's. It certainly got your attention, like standing behind a 747 at takeoff.
