Illinois?

Over a very long time we have had to endure some questionable politics and policies in Illinois. At least three of the last six governors are serving or have served prison time. From both major parties. Those are facts anyone can look up. And so this doesn’t become a political statement. I’ll just leave it at that.

I’m originally from Illinois. I understand this. Chicago is the largest population center and satisfaction there can dip pretty sharply. Right now crime is sort of high there, which may be driving part of the discontent.

Aside from the obvious agriculture economy which exists in most of the state, Illinois is a also a heavy manufacturing state. So, cities like Chicago, Rockford, Peoria (the three largest cities in the state) and some other locations can quickly be affected if there is any dip in manufacturing. Unemployment can quickly exceed the national average in certain locations. I grew up in Rockford, and that was an economic cycle that affected us there.

In addition, the taxes tend to be on the high side, which contributes to a sense of discontent. Illinois has also historically suffered under some poor management at the state government level.

Now, in the more rural areas, it can be pretty nice if you like that sort of lifestyle. Galena was mentioned earlier. I like Galena. It’s very rural and has more hills than much of the rest of the state. The central part of the state is amazingly flat. The featureless landscape makes for a pretty boring place to live, but it also makes for tremendous farmland. Illinois has some of the richest soil on earth, thanks to the glacial deposits left by previous ice ages. Glacial activity is also part of the reason for the flatness of the state.

But, if you’re looking for excitement, there really isn’t anything in Illinois, apart from sporting teams, based mostly in Chicago.

So, yeah...I can understand the sentiment.

Well, we're shading connecticut a beautiful Illinois red as well. Taxes taxes taxes. We like to chase mfg out of this state..... don't worry, us common folk will pick up the tab.

Anyone can leave..... but once you do, you'll never afford to come back. Not that you'd want to.
