I Am Not A Bass Player:

So, many years ago, I was once asked to play bass for a Mariachi band. I thought the pants with all the buckles down the leg looked cool, so I agreed.

I never had any instruction in bass, I just figured since the string layout is the same as the first four on a guitsr, I could play it. Over the years, I found myself filling in, quite frequently, on the bass.

Now, with my guitars and amps, they don't have a nick or scratch after 30 years of playing. I always taped off the rivets on my pants and turned my belt buckle over me left hip to keep from gouging my guitars. I still have toys from my childhood. I guess because we didn't have much, we took care of our things...

A few months ago, I was hired to throw down some guitar work on a partially completed blues record. I was asked if I could also play bass. I said, "a little," and did some bass lines.

After that, I was asked to fill in at a few live shows for a missing bassist. That turned into being asked to join the group.

Crazy thing...I've never owned a bass!!!

So, not wanting to drop big $$$ on this temporary assignment, I bought my first used instrument - a $60 Ibanez bass. It actually turned out to be really nice. Very quiet. Good intonation.

It's funny they see me as a "great bassist," but in reality, I'm just playing leads... :-)

When I was much younger, some 34 years ago... I played bass in 3 bands. It was a lot of fun. Heavy Metal and 70s rock!

Yea, johnny...you know he rips the bass. He's just a guitar man at heart. Open up Robert, your a damn good bass player too....that's why they want you to play with them.:D

I know what you mean though. I've owned two basses and never played more than a minute.

I had an early 70 Rick 4001...I owned it for 25 years and never used it. I got it for $100, sold it for around 2k. Deal of a lifetime.

Our bandleader and his Custom Shop Stratocaster. Next week, I'm asking him to put my Gibson SG through the wringer and give me his thoughts....IMG_5669.JPG
