How Much Do You Charge?

For those of you who play out, how much do you charge for private affairs, like weddings, bachelorette parties, etc?
To play bass I usually charge:
All the food I can eat, has to be anything on the menu.
Little rounds of filet mignon
Crawfish etouffee, broiled trout, fried green tomatoes, must have Hollandaise Sauce.
2. All the beer I can drink, Abita Turbo Dog (served by the beer Goddess)
I don't ask for much, I just like to play.
3. 15% of the door.
4. NO brown M & M's.

These are difficult times here for rock music bands that perform their own songs. Rock and hard rock music is not popular now here. in the late 90's I was playing every weekend and with much better deals than now. But if you perform popular covers music it's a bit different. Covers music it's not my thing although we play Ramones, Motorhead and Black Sabbath on our gigs.

This is exactly why I stopped gigging. As you said, late '90s into early '00s the gigs for original music were plentiful and well attended, and the pay was commensurate. When the places to play went away so did I - I refuse to play in a cover band; playing other peoples music literally sucks the joy out of playing for me.

Now, there are too few venues and the ones there are seem to all lean toward Indie/Alternative - no places want to book unknown original hard rock or metal bands.

As to the original question, I wish I could help. It's been 20 years since I played a paying gig.

Bad Dog was a money-making machine....private events and estate parties generally have no budgetary limitations.

They were the best clients....and we played non-stop during the pandemic.

Put another way, the money and the performing was so intoxicating that it caused marital stress and i had to step away from music altogether.

My wife flat-out told me that she didn't care about the money anymore.

)And, then again, I've played in bands who made $400 to cover a 4 hour slot...LOL)

But at the height of our band's lifetime, i was earning $2,500/week and this was steady over a two year period.

For example, Rock-N-Brews at San Manuel Casino paid $2,750.00 for a pair of 2 hour shows with a 45 minute encore, plus comp'd meals and individual suite.

Those were good times....
