Was down at my favorite shop yesterday talking with my buds there, Johnny told me about this young lad who plays guitar and his father went down and bought a Fender Strat for $850 at our local pawn shop. The kid has also been wanting a Tele. So anyway the young guy was so excited to tell Johnny, who by the way always buys from his local shop. So they met over at his house the young fella and his dad. So anyway Johnny was overlooking the guitar, the young man said what do you think? Johnny said to him , you just got duped its a fake guitar!! So Johnny explained to them why that was so. Johnny said take it back see if you can get your money back. They went back the Father told the Owner of the pawn shop, you sold me a fake guitar, I want my money back!! Fortunately they gave them the money back. Johnny said come down to the guitar shop, I want to show you something, I was there when this took place yesterday. Johnny took a made in Japan Fender Tele white in colour with Gold hardware and placed it on the counter, a few minutes later the Boy and his father show up. And so it begins Johnny said you see for $1100 you could have this guitar well made, would of cost you $300 dollars more. Johnny was just explaining to him, you would have had a legit guitar in perfect working order for $300 bucks more, but you would rather buy a used fake guitar and spend $850 at the pawn shop. I never buy anything from the pawn shop or used equipment on kijjijji or any ads. I always buy from my local shop where I can trust everything is above board. That being said the Father and the Son should be thanking Johnny over and over again. I don't know if they did or not, I didn't ask.

I'm sure there are descent pawn shops.
In general, I don't think one would want to shell out big coin in one though.

I'm looking to spend less and get more type thing.

Always good to do ones research on whatever it is one is getting.
The more one knows....

Interesting story. But MAN $850 for a USED STRAT/TELE of any kind? Now I know it is Canadian money, but MAN,

S5, was it fake because it was like a Chender? or was it a Fake because he was told it was an American Std, so he paid full bore for a Mexican or Asian made Fender that would sell for much less? I am confused.

Pawn shops around here are full of pure junk at stupid prices.
They make Craigslist look good.o_O
It really is buyer beware.
Most of my guitar acquisitions have come from good friends or new retail places like Sweetwater & Musicians Friend.
Adrian's Swampy Sales has also been a great resource. :beers:

Happens at pawn shops, guitar shops, craigslist, etc - sometimes the person selling it was duped and doesn't know it themselves - I think the key word is a place you can trust that has people working there that know the difference between legit gear and fake/fudged gear.

Most pawn shops are staffed by short timers at min. wage who dont have a CLUE --- they google search the item someone is trying to pawn -- offer them (maybe) 50.00 on a 450.00 guitar (regardless of make just an example) -- then hold it for the 30 day period and throw it on the wall for sale for 325.00 ----and watch it collect dust for 6 months then MAYBE mark it down to 200.00 and it moves----or doesnt ----
by that time the employee that did the deal is gone anyway --

not defending the pawn broker but they probably had NO IDEA it was fake -- it said "fender" they assumed it was one -- again they paid so little FOR IT -- they probably didnt care either way

Yeah, you gotta take care... I've had a fair amount of experience with SGs (buying, selling, researching, changing parts, etc), so I'd be pretty happy buying a second hand SG and know what I was getting, but when you're younger (or maybe you just wanna play, you aren't into 'gear' per se) it can be tough not to be cheated.

I'm the worst guitar player in my group of guitar playing friends, but most of the rest of them, good players, know nothing at all about guitars; they just pick up and play... Some of you may remember old threads I did on a Fender '57 strat (MIJ) and a 80s Les Paul Custom that I fixed for friends - both had been taken to local guitar shops where the repairman(?) had said they couldn't be fixed, and my friends just hadn't played these excellent guitars for years; the LP needed a new bridge and the strat needed a shim to help with neck angle - that was it...

Pretty much everyone on here knows their stuff it seems, but for youngsters or folks who just wanna play, either take somebody with you who does know or buy new or buy from a well-known guitar shop you can trust.
