Gear you've acquired over the years, and is part of the family

Bit of an odd post, but I have a bunch of garbage going through my brain right now. I thought it might be fun to see what the different responses might be.

Many of you in this asylum have many guitars, basses, other stringed instruments, amplifiers, sound systems, and other weapons of aural destruction. I thought it would be fun to see where you're at with certain bits of kit, and how close they are to you. It would also be fun to hear different stories of how some of you acquired certain instruments over the years.

I may take a different job in the fall, and selling some stuff may be on the horizon. Which is odd, because I'll be traveling again, and then buying stuff and trying to ship it home.

So, out of my hoard, some of the pieces I could never sell would be the following. It's a short list, and I'll give short synopsis for each piece. Please comment on any of your guitars, or other special musical instruments.

Please try to keep this serious, and away from "Ferengy-ism" type comments. I know it's a lot to ask.

For starters, here we go:

'68 Gibson SG Junior. I bought this in '78 when I was sixteen. It was my first Gibson, and played my first gigs with it. It would be tough to let go, as I've been playing it for over forty years.

'82 Gibson Les Paul Std. I bought this in '83, and it was my first really nice guitar. I also played many gigs with it, and Les Paul signed it on my 45th birthday.

'69 Gibson SG Std. Purchased in '89, and again, another guitar I've played over a couple hundred shows with. Awesome guitar, and total road warrior.

'10 Homemade copy of '58 Flying V. I don't know how I did it, but I did it right. Played a bunch of gigs with it, and it's an amazing guitar. Braz. Rosewood fingerboard doesn't hurt any. Great guitar, and since it was my first build, I couldn't let it go.

'08 Javamagic "John Cipollina" SG Custom. I could never sell this one. Brian and I have been friends for ages. We're trying to figure out how we can get together for pints in the fall. If not then, January will have to do when I go to see Saxon at Hammersmith. I could never look him in the face and say I sold it.

'89 Marshall JTM45 Reissue. After years of listening to "This sounds just like a Marshall", and it didn't... I bought this. Not only did it sound like a Marshall at my budget at the time, this model always wins the JTM "Shoot - Outs." Again, many gigs with this amp. This amp is why I love non-master volume Marshalls.

2020 homemade JTM45. It sounds great. I made it, and it sounds like a KT66 JTM45 should. Added mention, is that my 1970 8x10 cabinet stays with these two JTM45 heads.

'72/'73 Marshall 1987 50 watt head and two Bass Lead cabinets (full stack). This is the monster that will get you Paul Kossoff and Mick Ronson sounds all day. Great amp, and it is what I had been searching for for years. And, I don't care if ears bleed when I play it.

'07 DST Engineering DST-30. It's basically a clone of Rory Gallagher's AC-30 with two original early '60s Goodmans Audiom-60 speakers in it. It was custom made for me. If you want Rory sounds, Hank Marvin, Brian May, or anyone else who would bounce an AC-30 at full volume across a stage, this is the amp.

'72 Hiwatt DR-103 and '71 SE4122 cabinet. 100 watt Hiwatt and a 4x12 with Fanes. What more do you need to ask? This amp sounds so much better than the amp I was hosed out of by a former bandmate 30 years ago. This is a keeper.

Maybe I missed a couple, but these are what hit very close to home for me. I'm sure as I settle in with a couple of new guitars, they may find their long place position in my collection. Having a nice acoustic for the first time in my life certainly puts the Martin at the top of the list. Also, finally having a nice ES-335 is also taking a top spot.

Just to add a photo, here's my homemade Flying V, Jtm45 and '70 8x10. Cheers.

That is awesome that your family was very involved in your playing. Even though my grandfather played violin in the Boston Symphony, my parents were very against me playing music. They thought it would just be a fad, and I'd get bored with it. Seeing as I started on violin at age seven, I've been playing some sort of stringed instrument for well over fifty years. Some fad.

Partscaster Esquire. My good friend and bass player in my band Kevin took some beat up old parts and made an Esquire. He used good quality parts. I fell in love with the thing and ended up trading him a P-bass for it. I put a different neck on it and played it with the band often, and he was thrilled that I liked it so much. The P-bass became his main bass also. Kevin passed away on Christmas Day 2019, so there is no way I'm ever letting the Kevincaster go.

2013 Stratocaster generously gifted to me by @heltershelton . Not only was it a great gift from a great friend, but it has turned out to be a really good Strat. I love it.

Many of you know "The Guitar With No Name". My LTD sort of superstrat guitar. There's this guy who has been my best friend for 29 years. His father Mickey was like my second father. Micky gave me the LTD guitar on my birthday in 2015. I guess he thought I would like it for some reason. Well it turns out he was right. I have upgraded the hell out of that guitar and made it into something really special. Micky passed away in 2017, so that guitar has a lot of meaning to me.

2017 Fender Baja Telecaster. Bought it brand new in early 2018, and it is simply the best damn Tele I have ever played.

1972 Fender Bassman 50 head and a 1968 Fender "drip edge" 2x12 cab. Hand wired tube amp, and an amazing sounding cab. To say "it takes pedals well" is a ridiculous understatement. One of the mostest bestest sounding amps I've ever owned.

I guess im kinda like @67plexi in that i cant really part with anything. I have over the years, sold a few items and always seemed to regret it later ( amps and effects mostly, never a guitar though).

But if i absolutely had to pick a few things i couldn't part with whatsoever? There's 4 that cannot leave under any circumstances

1994 Fender Telecaster MIM: the guitar that started it all. 12th birthday present and first guitar i ever owned. Its changed appearances over time and doesnt resemble its original look at all but is actually better than it ever was now

1996 Gibson SG Standard: first Gibson I ever owned and bought it as a teenager from my uncle with blood sweat and tears lol. Still used a lot today and always faithful.

2003 Gibson Explorer Pro: custom ordered from Gruhn Guitars and has been the #1 since the day I bought it. I literally could just use that and nothing else now from here on.

1997 JCM2000 DSL 50: another blood sweat and tears purchase as a kid. The most reliable amp I've ever owned and a swiss Army knife. Like the explorer, i could just use that and nothing else.

My first amp build; a JTM45 clone. My two Amp Godz* guided me step by step and taught me everything I know about safety, layout, soldering technique, on and on. When I first powered it up, I actually got tone. I was totally blown away. It lasted about 30 seconds until the HT fuse blew. A quick check found an unsoldered wire on the rectifier socket. As I had a lot of examples of how a proper board should look, I naturally rebuilt it from the ground up until it now looks respectable. And sounds even better.

* @CoyotesGator and @T-Rex - forever in your debt.

Guess it’s my turn. My very first “real” guitar was purchased in 1973. Yamaha 12 string. 1974 I purchased my Ovation acoustic. Both bought new

Fast forward to 2009. Bought my first electric. A G400 which I’ve changed everything on except the wood and the plastic. Followed by a kit Tele someone else had built. Refinished it as the original owner had painted the body with a paint brush. Ugly doesn’t begin to describe it. Then I decided I needed a Hagstron Viking since I’m part Swede. All these were purchased used.

I was pretty much done buying guitars till I saw the blue Strat in Sweetwater. Serious gas. As it turns out, it’s a bit of a unicorn. Really hard to find info on it. Almost like Fender built a few and decided that was it.

Somewhere in the 90s I felt I needed a bass. Enter the Ibanez. This one bought new.

A few years back I bought a Tele body blank (sorry Ramo). Few months back decided I needed to get my butt in gear and get it finished and assembled. This is where I am in the process. Body has been mostly shaped and sanded. Warmoth neck. Still accumulating the rest of the goodies to turn it into a real guitar and not just a vision. 1626187274050.jpeg

I will have to apologize for my Ferengyism Mr John, But if it were not for the opportunities these afforded me, I would not currently own a number of the Gems I have to include in my grails of "Family" instruments/amps/Effects etc.

Having said that,

I truly cannot see myself parting with my cheapys or my very expensive to me units.

So, included in those 99% keepers under all circumstances pieces I will start with my
'72 JMP 1987 4 hole 50 watt Head.
'78 JMP 4 hole Super Lead 100 watt head
Laney AOR 50 Watt Pro Tube Lead head

My Free to me due to damage Tech 21 RK5 Pedal
TS9
Dunlop Wah
Metal Zone
Vox Distortion Booster

Keeper Guitars/Basses

Steve Harris Signature P bass
Smitty's HB 30 Washburn
Gibson ES 135
My 4 SG's

Runner ups and in this category because some are easily replaceable by millions of others in the same model or they are too new to me to have any bond are:

My 2 Strats. SO easy to buy capable replacements.
Jackson Randy Rhoads RR3
PRS SE Custom Santana
Squier Classic Vibe Tele
Squier P and J basses
Epiphone Les Paul Std ( if I put the Stock Epi pups back in)

I know, kind of boring, but that's it.

When I mentioned Ferngyism, I just didn't want to see a bunch of comments saying "Send me your stuff if you don't want it." That's not what the thread is about.

My original capo was one of those double elastic jobs I used on the 12 string. It eventually ‘’sploaded and got tossed.

Here she is, the only capo I've ever owned.
