GCB-95 mods

One night I was reading about stuff online and discovered that the I revision GCB-95 comes with the Red Fasel inductor (as advertised) but also possibly with a DPDT switch from the factory (but not wired for true bypass). As I didn't have a wah this sparked my interest.

So off to the classifieds I went. The third one I inquired about wasn't sold and the guy was willing to entertain my stupid questions about the revision, so I bought it. Being almost unused also hinted to it being a rather recent one, and sure enough, after unpacking it and opening it up today, there it was practically laughing in my face:

Nice. So I modified it for true bypass using the stinkfoot instructions. Removed the buffer circuitry too.

Tested it and it worked like a charm. Rotated the pot one notch to the "bassier" side since it was a bit too shrill, and since I already had busted out the tools, I also did the "vocal mod" by swapping R5 with a 68k resistor instead of the stock 33k. Here's the last look at the guts:

As I'm not horribly ashamed of how it turned out I figured I probably should document what I did (also so that I will remember the next time I open it...)

I've certainly had worse evenings. Now all I need to find is a Boss OD-3 and then I'll have all the pedals I originally had as a teenager (GCB-95, OD-3, CH-1).

Good job on the wah mod. Thanks for the Stinkfoot link!

A few years ago I got a second used Cry Baby wah for real cheap with plans to mod the piss out of it. Gutted it and painted it. Replaced the original pcb with a BYOC upgrade kit that allows two inductors. I can select one or the other, or operate both inductors in series. A Red Fasel and a Halo. Turned out better than I expected.

Nice! That's certainly a lot more involved. A lot of familiar names there :)

Sort of unrelated but I had a rather strange train of thought today. The Finnish word for "baby" is "vauva" and it's an onomatopoetic word - the word sounds like the sound a baby makes. "vauva" also sounds like the sound a wah wah makes. The Cry Baby is originally from Italy, but "baby" in Italian is "bambino" which sounds nothing like a baby or a wah.

I should get out more, then again I guess I'm not alone in that in the current circumstances...

I have a couple of dead Cry Babies. Maybe I should try slapping a kit in one, or maybe sourcing my own fun stuff.
