With those slick n' smooth jazz sensibilities which eventually the mainstream LA soft rock movement weaponized to make $$$ hand over fist! (Hall and Oates, Kenny Loggins, Doobie Brothers, etc) What made it so magical is the snappiness meeting 70's soulfulness...

Here's an obscure tail end example from 1982 with a band featuring session legend Michael Landau. There's 6 bass changes in the first 13 seconds of the song lmao! You'll probably hate it but I love it lol. There's a really hot girl in the video even if you don't like the song!

Steely Dan ripped my ears open when I was 16, and I never got over it. One of the best experiences of my life was driving an Audi A3 along the PCH from Malibu south, listening to “Gaucho” on the 8 speaker stereo.

More than being musical giants, F*gen and Becker were amazing lyricists, taking prompts that could yield a short story and making a song from it. Randy Newman and Elvis Costello do this as well, but I especially love Steely Dan’s seemingly endless supply of hip cultural references.
